| I can tell from your vocabulary, writing style, and insights that you aren’t like the rest of us. Just how intelligent are you?? Give some stats or your schooling or something…, or do you just take time to craft your response? And given your brainpower why are you here on DCUM? |
| OMG, you are sooooo hilarious. So clever. Clearly it is YOU who is extra smart. /s |

If you’re not being sarcastic:
Occasionally I get very positive replies to my writing here, even when it’s casual or done in a hurry. I’ve been going through some hard years and am unemployed, with a long stretch of underemployment before that. DH ignores me. I have great friends but they are wrapped up in their lives. DCUM is a place where I can put some of my displaced career and social energy into helping others with their problems, providing recommendations, or just adding some levity to threads. Before I was sidelined by a bad choice of DH, I considered a career in scripted TV but ended up on the advertising side. Ivy undergrad and grad, SAT >1500 in the olden days, but never ever have I been the wittiest, most clever, quickest, or smartest one in the room. Most people can’t write their way out of a paper bag so being an ok writer stands out. Sadly for me, it doesn’t count for much in the corporate world these days. |
| That’s why DCUM is a much better place than Reddit. |
| I actually do think DCUMers are really smart, so I don’t assume OP is being sarcastic. I’m sure the proportion of people with professional degrees is at least 10x the general population. |
| Not only are we smart, we like to talk about ourselves. |
As shown by the astrology and height posts. |

That's why it's the only generalist messaging board I frequent. I haven't found another one like it, and I've lived in multiple countries.
It's just the nature of the DC area. It attracts cerebral types with advanced degrees that come from all over for their work. DC is a white collar town of subject matter expertise. Boring in all other respects, unless you like geeking out over patent law or whatnot. No, you don't need to know my IQ. |
We do so! Yes we do! Please tell us your IQ!!!! Lol. You idiot. |
It’s still worse if you’re in genpop. |
Agree. I’ve lived in multiple countries and multiple parts of the US and haven’t found a board similar to it anywhere else |
+1. Although the quality of responses has declined considerably in the last several years. I miss the days when DCUM was mostly full of highly educated DC-area posters. |
| I’m a professional writer/author and have multiple grad degrees (and a minor in creative writing). I’m absolutely terrible at math though! I’m on DCUM for the local insight. I’m also curious as to what people really think and as this is anonymous, it’s fascinating to me to see the unfiltered fodder you don’t get to see out in the real world. |
| I owe my witty snark to my parents: they made me practice the CogAT for months so that I could get into the AAP (Advanced Academic Program) in FCPS. Without being in AAP, I’d be wasting away on babycenter and Reddit. |
| Another Ph.d. here, former professor of writing as well as my specialty area, and book author. Also terrible at math and also very happy in the DC-area because of the level of education. In my (not extraordinarily wealthy) neighborhood most people have at least a master's level degree/JD/MD. |
