Anyone else that can relate?
Refuses to temperature check a turkey Takes cake out of the oven when checked & middle is raw / under done Has raw beef in the fridge and putting other raw-consumed items on top of it. ...I've been going here for a decade and don't think I've seen her this bad before. Given I'm in her home, do I just not eat? |
| Make her watch a few episodes of Gordon Ramsay Kitchen Nightmares on YouTube. There’s always a scene where he does a visit to the walk-in fridge and finds raw meat stored with other items. Tell MIL that Gordon is speaking to her for the same atrocity. |
| What does your spouse say? |
|
You are a total Grinch! I do not check turkey temperature either. I promise you, I don't need to do that; my turkeys are a result of decades of cooking and are perfect.
Please leave so the others can enjoy. |
| I think you posted last year, too. It is tiresome listening to your rant about nonsense. |
Yes, of course, she should not put fruit that is eaten raw on top of raw meat, but don't eat that fruit. If she is going to cook whatever is on top, then it is fine. |
| What do you mean food is on top of the raw meat? Touching it? Where else should she store raw meat before cooking? This isn't an industrial kitchen that has to follow food handling rules. |
DP - What's "grinchy" about not wanting to get food poisoning on Christmas? |
| I would eat only what I brought. That’s gross. |
Completely Uncovered? Gross. |
And you’ll still say so when you can’t see properly or smell properly or have the energy to cook properly… |
Uncovered meat? What's wrong with that in the fridge? Nothing is flying off of it. If there's meat on a tray and grapes next to it who cares? What is passing through the air? |
And what? Doesn't finish baking it or it's not baked enough to your liking? |
| OP, you’ve apparently hit a nerve with some people who do not practice the most basic food safety. I don’t have a professional or commercial kitchen but I still adhere to basic practices like checking the temp of poultry and separating my raw meats from produce. I worry about giving my family or guests food poisoning. I would be concerned about eating at your MILs but I also would be concerned about offending. If it’s just one meal, I’d look for safe things to eat (bread, cooked veggies) and say I’m not very hungry if comments are made. If it’s a long visit, I’d pack some snacks and sneak away once a day for a meal so I don’t go hungry. If you have a friendly relationship with your MIL, you may be able to broach a conversation but you have to tread lightly. |
| My mom is the same way. Somehow we never get sick. She thinks I'm crazy for being concerned about food safety. |
