ECNL moving to school year not calendar

MLS will happily go SY for EVERYTHING if it means owning youth soccer in America.

They are well on the way.

I’m all for SY for my DC in ECNL.

I fail to see why it’s important for MLSN to also go to BY?
Feeling of superiority of difference in age cutoff as a marketing for parents of 11 year olds could be a reason to stay BY. (So few go pro that saying you have a pro pathway as a reason is not close to being believable.)

Issues of MLSN clubs staying include but are not limited to being able to scout properly when younger kids are in SY system, Q1 and Q2 on average getting less soccer motivation by being on lower teams/having less skilled positions making them lean multi sport and less soccer focused, misalignment with schools at about age 16-18, etc.

The hope is that MLSN can stay BY and move their ecosystem down about a year or two younger to lessen RAE in U.S. for boys but after a year or so of having a different age cutoff than the other leagues, the issues mentioned above could very likely push MLSN to SY.

Overall, surprised that there is that much interest in MLSN staying BY from both sides. If MLSN stays BY, everyone more or less gets what they want.

And possibly a step back in their development

Lol found the BY parent…

You’re a dolt. You know nothing about footie development. BY or SY aside, PP is right.

Hi BY delusional parent, can you explain how is it a possible step back in their development?

He’s probably alluding to the fact that soccer in the us rushes to the larger field and should spend more time in small sided games

SC Surf Girls GA switched from GA to ECRL. Not sure why it wasn't to ECNL (their boys have both ECNL and ECRL). Perhaps they will have to earn their way up.

Charleston SC and JIYSC boys, the two other larger clubs here joined two other clubs (Wake -which had two teams in NPL - and Carolina Velocity) and departed the South Atlantic NPL for MLS2. Joining them were several clubs that were pushed down from MLS Next 1 (Queen City, Triangle, and Tormenta among them).

No word yet from Charleston or JIYSC Girls, which operate in the NPL. Neither are strong as the pool in our area isn't big enough for three competitive teams of girls here.

It appears that as MLS Next expanded, that range in quality widened which justified the tiers.

Just to clarify a few things in this post that aren't accurate: yes, the Charleston and James Island NPL teams will now be MLSN2, but the Wake FC NPL teams will remain in NPL I suspect, as their MLSN2 team played in NAL and will switch to MLSN2. Wake FC will still have MLS Next tier 1 teams.

The QCM, Triangle United teams (no clue about Tormenta) are adding their 2nd teams to MLSN2 but will also still have tier 1 teams.

I have heard that Tormenta is being demoted out of Tier 1 MLSN to just tier 2. Which makes sense as they were way too weak of a club at most age groups.

I was thinking the same. It’s crazy that we have 11/12 year old girls playing on the field size designed for grown men and we actually care who wins games like this at u13.

I would think the advantage of 11v11 experience would wash out pretty quickly. History of playing against better competition and being older/bigger/faster/stronger is what is going to give the sept-dec birthdays an advantage longer.

That leads to the question or which age groups will be most beneficial for sept-dec birthdays dropping down? U10-U13? I would think U8/U9 there’s not been enough time playing with older kids to see the most benefit and after puberty the physical differences won’t be as prominent.

Probably not the ones who have played 11v11 and adding them on teams who have not. Sure, it may help the CLUB. But that's a potential step backward for them and how many parents in this situation view it.

It maybe helps kids who are SWITCHING clubs to a better situation/higher-level of play. Otherwise, it's more like moving a kid down from the top team to team 2 to have more playing time/develop more confidence. That can work out BUT not always. Often, it's the first step out of soccer.

If MLSN doesn't switch, kids born January through August would play one league and September-December the other.

Do you know where the Tormenta team is based out of? They, and VA Rush/FC Richmond are all listed in the Carolina's league of MLSN2 - which is not amazing for travel.

Tormenta's got locations around Savannah and Hilton Head, but pretty sure the higher level teams practice and play matches out of their main Statesboro, GA location. The MLS2 divisions page has got the FC Richmond and VA Rush teams listed in both the Carolinas and Virginia division of tier 2, so am guessing it's the latter as that gives VA division 8 teams and Carolinas 10 teams.

I have no idea about whether Tormenta got demoted from tier 1, but this isn't the first time I've heard that rumor.

100%

MLSN BY for Jan-Aug and ECNL SY for Sept-Dec

That would be so dumb!

Wonder if (in this scenario) there would be a bunch of BY and SY tournaments as well lol... The longer you think about the implications of one group of leagues staying BY and the others go SY the less it makes sense. Not that 'sense' has been in high demand though.

BY crowds want to keep that sense even if it looks financially ridiculous to the club owners.

It's not going to be "a bunch" of BY tournaments. They would only be in-house style tournaments for the MLS (or GA?) teams that choose to stay BY - if they do it. We'll see.
