My mom developed big bald patches in her 60's due to an autoimmune issue. She takes oral minoxidil and it has helped, but she also now has a mustache. Not sure I'm willing to make that trade off BUT when I look in the mirror and see those thin strands barely covering my scalp at the part line I feel so bummed out.
My bloodwork is fine, so there's no obvious issue save for menopause (I'm 54) |
| Maybe do oral minox plus laser hair removal for the lip? It sucks though, I hear ya |

I have always had this wildly thick hair, the kind that was so thick that I couldn't use things like barrettes and elastics would be too loose on their own but my hair was too thick to double twist them. My dad died with a full head of hair in his 80s.
I had a hysterectomy at 41 so have never been very clear on when I have gone through menopause, but 2025 has both been a year when I've definitely been exceptionally moody and a bit psycho, and my hair has started noticeably thinning at my hairline and scalp. Every day I'm pulling hair out of the brush and it's depressing AF The only thing that keeps me overall OK about it it is that my mom had congenital progressive alopecia and was basically nearly bald by 40 and wore wigs and eyeliner for the rest of her life. And honestly, it didn't seem like a bad deal sometimes when she could just put on the hair of the day and I was there with the blow dryer taking up an hour of my time every day. |
| I use Rx topical minoxidil (couldn’t tolerate the oral) and my hair is back to pre-menopause fullness. |
| I started taking iron, Vit D, B-12, Vit C, Zinc, and biotin daily. Noticed a big difference in 10 days. |
How old are you and the time you think you are in menopause. |
| I’m so sad about my hair thinning too. I have always had beautiful thick hair (I am not pretty so my hair was my only good feature) and it’s thinning and making me feel so sad. But I am not willing to use minoxidil for the rest of my life for a cosmetic purpose. Side effects and longer term risks not worth it. I hope to find a good topper when necessary. |
How old are you? |
These supplements have also helped me, though I don't bother with the biotin. Biotin can help people who are deficient, but most people aren't. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK547751/ |

Oh, ashwaghanda helps too. |
That is not too young but could be result of menopause. |
Is this a cream you put on your scalp? How does that work with washing your hair? Sorry to be so clueless but looking for options outside taking the oral formulation. |
| I’m 52 and have always had thin hair. My hair dresser told me to brush my hair frequently to stimulate hair growth and it certainly noticed after I’d been doing it for six months. Use a scalp massager brush with lots of prongs. It’s also relaxing. |
It’s a liquid, not a cream. And I apply it once/day in the evening. I wash my hair at night (not daily) and apply it after washing. |
