OP clarifying...it's all bad. Don't mean to distinguish.

Terrible that schools allow kids to be subjected to such horrible abuse

Seriously - talk about NOT offering a safe experience.

They don't "allow" it. These are private chapters of the greek system and the students - technically adults in the college world - can make their own decisions whether or not to participate. When something tragic happens - because the students (not the college) made bad choices - the universities sometimes shut the frats down, as did UVA.

My god, these college kids that torture other kids are sociopaths. Who gets enjoyment out of causing such pain? It’s sick and should be shut down. I wish more pledges would just walk away.

It's all consensual. Let them fight.

If schools wanted to disallow it, they wouldn't allow involved fraternities to have on campus housing, they would suspend/expel involved students, and they would loudly condemn it. In the article about Dartmouth, it talked about how the school instituted swimming lessons after a hazed student drowned, instead of speaking out against the role alcohol, and forced alcohol consumption, played.

Sick. These people and institutions need to face criminal charges. This is criminal activity and the only way things will change is if there are appropriate consequences. Expulsions of individual students, temporary suspensions of fraternity chapters, and private civil lawsuits aren’t enough.

This. Anyone who participated belongs in jail. Period.

Schools are well aware of what happens in Greek life at their campuses and reference Greek life to promote themselves.

I know a few kids at Texas at Austin who are barely alive after being hazed to such a severe degree this fall. It's insane what happens.

I can tell you are just another hysterical GDI. And try actually reading the article. No one was waterboarded, and stripping down to underwear is just standard fare for the Greek system.

NP. People have died because their brothers have been too stupid, too mean, and/or just too drunk to do the right thing.

I come from a Greek family but didn't join a sorority. A lot of bad stuff goes on at frat parties. On the other hand, my best friend met her husband at one.

My sons and I have talked about ethics of drinking and they know they need to be moderate if they decide to drink, look out for others, and report/take kids to get medical care even if they might get in some trouble. Trouble is better than dead.

Old-style hazing isn't necessary and it is dangerous. It's a legacy of a worse time. And everyone knows that people lie about it not happening. And that often it's the coolest frats that are the worst. And that the universities won't act unless situations are egregious. Because of traditions.

My dad's frat has been kicked off of several campuses. Also my grandpa's. And my husband's. 3 different nationals. Hard to keep a straight face when you hear the lofty words about what these organizations allegedly stand for.
