Checking engine oil

Just curious if my fellow female drivers check their cars’ engine oil. I take my car to service according to the minder, but I started checking the oil level myself just in case.

Why female? Anyway I never check oil except one time when I had an obvious oil leak. Not female.

My wife never checks. Same with my daughter. They don’t even know where dip stick is located. And that’s okay.

The car tells me when I need an oil change but I certainly know how to check the level with the dipstick if I feel the need. And all the other fluids as well.

Back when I had my first [used] car in the 1980s, I had to regularly check the oil level and even top off the oil if it was too low. Cars these days rarely leak oil like that, and even if they do, the little oilcan light comes on to let me know. So, no, I do not check the oil level of my 2020s car.

If I see oil on the garage floor, I check my oil. Don’t new cars have dummy lights when the oil reservoir gets low?

My husband never checks anything on the engine. I do check the oil and the windshield fluid once a month. These skills were part of the package when I was driving the manual transmission.

Not really a concern unless you are just overly paranoid or drive an older leaking vehicle, or never change your oil, only top it off.

But at least you learned how.
ow check your blinker fluid also! That's the important one! Don't want to get into an accident because your blinker fluid was low and your blinkers didn't work.

Yes, I check my oil. I recently learned that my husband does not know how to do that, so I taught him and our older kids (10 and 7).

If the oil light comes on, it is a critical situation and your engine could soon or has already been damaged.

If you dont check your oil regularly and that light comes on, you failed as an owner.

With modern cars, if your car is less than 8 years old and you change your oil according to the recommended schedule, you don't need to check it.

The only exception is if the car has had a history of oil burning/consumption in the past in which case you should check it periodically. But, this would indicate a bigger problem that would need to be investigated.

Unfortunately if you try to make a warranty claim because you're one of the unlucky ones with premature engine failure and the dealer observes that the oil level was low, they will void the warranty and not cover it. It is expected as part of normal maintenance that the owner checks the oil level regularly, so that would be a bit of a financial gamble not to.

The advice from the self proclaimed experts here is hilarious. 😆

Nope, but I do know how to do it. I get regular oil changes and have never had an issue.
