The DC area has too much elitism/striving energy as it is and one of my concerns around private school is putting ourselves into a community where that's hyper-concentrated. Are there any schools known for great academics and extracurriculars while having a more "normal" parent population?
So far we've only really looked into Congressional which seems like a great place but how much can one really tell from the outside |

The only way to avoid this is to enroll your kids for high school only. That's when any decent cohort of down-to-earth families arrives. Pretty much anyone who pays $50-65K for elementary and middle school in this area is going to be some degree of elitist.

| Any school is going to have all types of parents. DC attended Congressional (and loved it!) and we thought the parents we got to know were great, but I’m sure there are snobby elitist parents there too. |
Check out Edmund Burke (6-12 grade) on Conn Ave in DC. Likely the vibe you are seeking. |

What is wrong with snobby elitist people? If you are around them enough, you find the humor in it.
It seems like I have been surrounded by them my whole life. That is just how life works. What is the real alternative? |
| We went from a lower cost private to a higher cost private. It didn't make much difference. There's always a subset who think they're all that. |
Oh my, no. Burke families think they are “normal” but it’s just relative to the even more snobby and elitist schools on Wisconsin Avenue. |
The risk is that your children become snobby and elitist. |
Oh man, have you ever lived outside the DC area? I've lived in the midwest and mountain west and it's a whole different (refreshing) environment. |
That was not my experience at all, but likely depends a lot on your grade. My experience was that the parents were entirely normal, not snobby and even more down to earth than our upper NW DCPS ES. |
As long as they are self aware, isn’t that just inevitable if they go through top schools and land a nice job? |
| Sidwell families are generally very nice |
| Snobby elitist people suck emotional energy to shore up their empty vanities so better avoid them. If they were truly all that they won't need your fawning. |

All the snobby elitists on this thread thinking that they are not the snobby elitists OP is concerned about is hilarious. The OP thinking they are not snobby elitist is also hilarious.
At least I know I am a snobby elitist and try to correct for it. If you are going to private school, you are not trying to avoid elitist snobs. What you really want to avoid is A$$H013$ (I think we call them toxic people now) and A$$H013$ are no more common in one SES group over another. Just go to a youth sporting event and you will see A$$H013$ in all shapes sizes races and SES. Send your kid to the school best for them, and just deal with the A$$H013$ because you're an adult now. |
Meantime, they are ultra rich. |
