Grading System UC App

Anonymous
Does anyone know what to select for grading system for the UC Application. I mean the education section where the applicant enters the name of the High School and the grading system the high school uses.

If you select "ABCDF," then it won't let you input +/- for the grades, so every A- becomes an A and does not match the transcript. Concerned, my kid wrote the UC App Help desk and they said select "Other" and put in exactly what the transcript says. So kid went to change the app and then got a Warning message that made her think her original choice was the right one:
Warning
Please review the list of grading systems and select "Other" only if you
do not see your school's grading system. (*If you receive "A B C D F"
with plus or minus grades, you should select "A B C D F" as the grading
system. UC does not recognize plus and minus grades*).

When she followed up with the Help people, they said to use Additional Comments to put in the + and - grades. ???

This has to be a very common question. I don't understand why there is conflicting advice. Can someone advise?

DS is still wondering how in the world he inputs his SAT Math and Verbal scores in the UC app. It doesn't seem to let him list his two sections with the proper scoring ranges.

The UCs really have their ways of doing things...

OP here. Wait, I thought they didn't look at test scores? Do people slip them in somewhere?

My DC just put in straight As, Bs and got into UCLA last year (2025). He went to a private and had mainly A minus grades.

No test scores (duh)
And no +\- grades are reported.

As I recall, you input just the letter grade so an A- is an A. A B+ or a B- is a B.

I wish i remembered. ( One dc graduating ucla in2026, another dc was admitted in 2023 but didnt attend). Just put everything you want to communicate in the comments. My dcs had scores of 35 and 1550 so im sure they put them somewhere. Even tho ucla “doesnt care” and “doesnt look” at test scores.

But lemme tell you dealing with the uc system for four years also has not been fun. A bureacracy on top of a bureaucracy

UC's don't recognize +/- grades. California public high schools might "show" them on a student's transcript but the UC GPA just uses 3.0 4.0 5.0

thanks all!

Where is your DS trying to enter his SAT scores? UCs are test blind. I read they don’t want to see scores anywhere on your app…

univ California system is test blind. No test scores

Don't input your SAT scores. It is illegal for the UC's to consider your SAT for admission purposes. Don't violate the law!!!!

They look at AP scores for admissions. And there’s a space to enter them on the application. So lots of test scores, just no SAT/ACT.

The UC portal has a space for test scores for the purpose of satisfying A-G requirements. They are not used in admission.

Entering test scores does not "violate the law"
