Can someone explain why it’s OK for TX but not for CA to redistrict?

Watching Prop 50 in CA. People opposed say it’s not right but support TX doing it. Trump being the biggest hypocrite here. Can someone please explain their reasoning? Not their sound bites, their arguments. Or do they have real arguments?

Texas has been notified by the Department of Justice that its districts are in violation of federal law.

California's redistricting measure was passed in violation of the California constitution. It requires a certain amount of time for a bill to be made available to be read before being voted on.
This would not have worked for being on the ballot right now, so they instead took another bill that was already posted and replaced its text.

CA fought fire with fire.

My cousin was ranting on FB about how terrible prop 50 was and I had to remind her she was lucky to have a governor who put it to the people, instead of disenfranchising them like the Texas governor did.

I didn’t get a comment back.

Yup. California did and maybe Virginia will be next.

Democrats didn't start this fight about redistricting. Republicans did and they may regret it if this Blue Wave momentum continues next year. I think someone called it "dummymandering" on another thread, because they're going to lose their safe red seats trying to gain more purple ones.

Big thread here when it was first proposed https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1287521.page

Yeah there’s a good discussion of this in the results thread.

Virginia absolutely has a mandate to reduce the number of house Republicans to two after tonight.

It's not ok but at least in CA it went to the voters.

With California set to redraw its congressional maps to boost Democrats’ efforts to win control of the US House next year, Gov. Gavin Newsom called on other states to take their own measures to take back the majority.

“We need to see other states, the remarkable leaders that have been doing remarkable things, meet this moment head on as well, to recognize what we’re up against in 2026,” Newsom said, naming states including Virginia, Maryland and New York.

I have seen literally the opposite phenomenon

This was not the Democrat's ideas, but Republicans opened a Pandora's box by playing around with redistricting so shamelessly.

What’s even more interesting is that it won in areas like the Central Valley and Orange County…not democratic strongholds at all, pretty red. The GOP is wrecking the country and people are sick of it.

Remember Texas did it without putting it to the voters. It was just Abbott and his merry men in the state legislature. Texas may not even gain those seats people are so angry.

I think that’s because Dems are in general agreement that
A) Midcycle redistricting is wrong
B) This is not the time to play by the rules while the other side brazenly cheats

If Trump is going to remake the rules, Dems are going to play by them too.
