Why is having 4 kids not considered a large family but 5 kids are seemingly where it becomes a large family?

Curious about this viewpoint for families you meet with 4 and with 5. Pregnant with number 4 now fwiw. I’ve heard this many times over the years.

Is four just more common? I haven’t looked at the numbers.

4 is a big family. Especially now when expectations for parenting are so high.

But I also think it was big back in the 80s and 90s. I was in a family with 4 kids and we were outlers. Most people had 2, some people had 3. There were more families with onlies than families with 4. I only knew a handful of families with more than 4 and they were either super religious or the kids had multiple dads or moms.

Four is a large family. The tipping point from 3 to 4 kids is where you hit "large family", although maybe it was between 4 and 5 in earlier generations.

In most cities even 3 is considered a lot of kids, but a family of 5 is not "a large family" in the same way a family of 6 is.

3 is a large family. 4+ is crazy/religious territory

4 kids is definitely a large family. Condoms exist!

I think it's a large family when you can't fit in one car anymore. But no shade! There's nothing wrong with a large family. It's gross to judge.

Where the heck do you live people don't think 4 kids isn't a large family? You have to go all the way back to the late 1800s for that to be average in the US.

I definitely don’t think there is a true definition that people would agree on. Most would say either 4 or 5. A few nights say 3.

3 is normal, 4 is big. I’ve never met anyone with 5.

Lol anything over 2 is "large." Maybe in Provo, but nobody in the DMV thinks you have a "normal" sized family.

IMO, 4 is large. Quite large.

4 is a large family. Even 3, while somewhat common, is a lot in this intensive parenting world we live in. We stopped at two and now that they are teens I don’t know how we would fit in the activities and schedule of a third. You’d need two extremely flexible parents and/oe a nanny or grandparent or very active carpooling, none of which we have.

3 is big. 4 is very large. 5 is weirdo something is wrong with you large.
