I think a moderate can be defined a few different ways.
1) Moderate viewpoints in the middle on most major issues 2) Some right-leaning viewpoints, some left-leaning viewpoints, some down the middle Do you agree that both of these that can call themselves moderates? I consider myself to be #2. |
| What we have now is far right extremists and then everyone else. No moderates. |
| I consider myself a moderate these days. I hold pretty left wing values - I am anti racist, pro poor, pro reproductive rights. I worked for USAID before its destruction. But I am a moderate in that I am a pragmatist. I respect that other people disagree with me vehemently, and while I can believe they are wrong and harmful with every speck of my being…I still acknowledge their right to their opinions and to be equal participants in our democracy. And I can negotiate, discuss, and partner with them to find compromise that will give us each some of what we want, but not all. I have faith that doing things this way will result in gradual progress and stability, which I value more than having every bit of what I believe in now without compromise. |
| I’m #2, right there with you, OP. |
|
Overton's Window destroys your theory and the entire point of it was to push "white moderates" into extreme positions.
It's over, Jonny. |
This only works if there are people on the other side who also believe these principles and negotiate in good faith + have the power and will to insist on it. In other words (since those folks don’t exist), your point of view leads you to arguing with the only other reasonable people in the room - other democrats - about things that honestly do not affect 95% of the people, like trans rights. |
Sorry I meant to respond to 9:26 because being reasonable is allowing all of this destruction to rampage. |
| We already went over this this week. Moderates are MAGA who don’t want to admit it. |
90% of us are # 2s and the other 10% are brainwashed, low IQ idiot extremists. |
Yes. |
Why do you want to alienate people with a dumb comment like this? |
What's confusing is that people that claim to be moderate are all "extreme" globalists, and the positions they take don't seem to be flexible at all. For example, Moderates fight tooth and nail for as much immigration as they can get. Just doesn't make any sense when you consider what they claim to be. There's another term out there, "Centrist", I think that's what Republican's call them. It's basically the same idea, but different party. Centrism isn't very popular in GOP circles. |
It's much easier to have your attitude about slow progress when you aren't the person actively suffering under the status quo. I think thats what people who smugly call themselves moderates, as though they are morally andmlogically superior to everyone else, don't seem to get. You worked for USAID. You care about poor people. But you're not too vexed if policies are enacted that leave the recipients of USAID starving, because YOU have food, and can just calmly wait for slow progress. It doesn't make you better than people who find the situation a bit more urgent. |
| I always considered myself a moderate. I voted for Trump the first time but have since voted all blue and will for the foreseeable future. I still don’t support some far left views, like transgenders in girls sports, etc., but that is meaningless compared to the destruction, corruption and senseless cruelty that is happening now. |
I agree with you but where I differ is that the current "conservative" that embraces "nazism" and racism and other "i-sms" basically don't want equal rights for all. and I cannot compromise on value that is supposed to be foundational to our country. I am not interested in compromising with racists etc. |
