Has tipping gotten out of hand?

If you go to Europe, the common practice is to round up the bill to the next Euro and if service was good to great, you may give an extra Euro or two, but no pressure.

In Asia, no tipping. It's based on honor, the thinking being 'you don't need to tip me to do my job well'.

Here in the USA, you are presented with the bill on a tablet that defaults for starters to 25%!

WTH?

Totally agree! And the greedier people get the less I go to these places. I’ll pick up my own takeout, even from the nicest restaurants. It’s ridiculous. Plus tipping at places like Starbucks will just make me not go to Starbucks. The prices are high enough and I like the money where it is in my bank account.

Never seen a bill on a tech device or with gratuity demanded. Maybe stop going to places like that?

Do you not go out? They're everywhere from coffee shops to bakeries to restaurant's big and small--if you're paying on an electronic device, it defaults to a tip amount that varies by establishment.

The tip isn’t demanded but it shows up on the screen as a suggestion, usually with a few options, and in some place the lowest option is pretty high. There’s usually a NO TIP or custom tip option. There’s literally no way you have not seen this if you have purchased something in person in the last few years.

I actively avoid fast food places that have tip on their payment option menus. Namely Starbucks and Subway. Tips just leave such a bad taste in my mouth. If you aren’t paid a tipped wage- I’m not tipping.

When I was in high school and college the store I worked in (ice cream and dessert store) paid us bonuses based on the amount of customers we served/ amount purchased each night. That’s what should be happening. It should be the companies paying their workers. Instead they have skeleton crews but promise them higher tips because there’s no one to split them with. Ugh.

I think those predetermined tipping amounts are aspirational. I feel absolutely zero shame in clicking "Custom Amount" and putting in whatever percentage I want to tip. So because of that no, I don't feel like it's out of control. Just because they ask doesn't mean I have to give.

i honestly have doubts that many of these businesses even pass on those tips to the employees.

I no longer go to a restaurant where the 20% tip is automatically included.

My DD is waiting tables while in college. At her restaurant a % of her gross sales is taken out for the hostess, bartender, bussers, and kitchen staff. If she doesn’t get good tips, she would end up with nothing.

Haven't seen it at all, but heard of it. You must be out and about often. Cut that down and take the 25% lower. Problem solved.

Mostly we aren’t talking about waitresses. They are paid a tipped wage. We’re talking about fast casual who already make a normal wage.

Same. I’d love an expose.
