Haverford

Hi all - my child is being recruited by Haverford and would love any feedback. We are coming from a Christian school, so I am worried it might be a little too left for us. Anyone have kids that go there? Is there a Christian community? Thanks for any info at all - the good, bad and ugly.

Used to be one of the best LACs decades ago. We toured two years ago and never applied because it seemed way, way too woke for our taste. Imposingly woke. You need to visit.

Disagree. Know a kid very well there who is an athlete and is very happy. Kid is left of center but would not be happy in an activist community. Have not heard anything about that - sure it exists, but not overwhelming.

Is this a great place for a kid from a small rural Christian community - no - there are probably better options. But it is worth a look.

Haverford has Quaker origins, and the institutional culture of tolerance, mutual respect, and individual dignity remains. It's small, the campus is lovely, and the town it's in is affluent and suburban. My DC chose Swarthmore over it based on what she wanted to study, but the schools are more similar than they are different. Your DC should not commit without visiting.

OP, the bottom line is that the overwhelming majority of the nation's top liberal arts colleges lean left, typically very much so, and Haverford is no exception. If your kid isn't ready for that, they need to look pretty far down the list to find a good fit.

I looked at Haverford decades ago and found it comparable to the WASP schools I looked at. I l’m dismayed to see from the posts on this board that it has slipped in some ways.

Davidson, Richmond, Denison may offer an LAC experience that’s friendlier for more conservative students

Of these, only Davidson is an academic peer of Haverford.

W&L is superior; Hillsdale is a peer.

Haverford is probably too left for Vladimir Lenin.

Although it could be an exciting experience for a young adult from a Christian school background, the experience might be too traumatic due to constant criticism from other students and, most likely, faculty. Your son would be treated with more kindness, tenderness, and respect by the drill sergeants at a Marine Corps boot camp.

Haverford College is a tiny school in terms of number of students. It is important for one to fit in at a small school. Highly unlikely that a student from a Christian school would fit in at super woke Haverford College.

Nevertheless, as an athletic team member, your son should be able to make a few friends. But, do you want to inject your child into an environment where he must keep his background, training, and thoughts to himself due to the risk of constant ridicule and rejection ?

It IS a Christian college, it’s one of the Quaker schools in Phila area. It’s a great school and great vibe. Students have a voice in governing and can take classes at neighboring Bryn Mawr and univ of Penn and Swarthmore and widener. Shuttles between them to facilitate. It’s a nice campus, happy students. Best of all there is an Amtrak station very nearby. Visit!

What are you talking about?? Haverford is founded on Christian values. No one will ridicule. Even if he’s an obnoxious maga, they will listen to him.
It’s a really nice environment.

spot on - the only leftist peer in this regard is Wesleyan, especially for athletes. Not saying it as a bad or good thing, but it exists - an attraction for some kids but not all
