Both my kids have struggled with losing weight in college. Neither kid has enjoyed the dining halls.
My DS is in a dorm with suites and a kitchen for the entire dorm. He’s started cooking and is becoming a popular resident chef. |
| DS is a freshman at UMd. Loves the food at South dining hall and the “night market” as well. Easily walking 15-20k steps/day and working out so def not gaining weight. |
| At least 90% of the time eats and enjoys the food. Eating more in college than at home, I’d say. But lots if walking and hills / stairs means weight is about the same. |
| My DS has been losing weight. ADHD meds and big walking distances don’t help. Have been sending protein shakes. |
| My freshman daughter just came home today for fall break and she’s definitely lost weight. |
| DD losing weight. Just very busy with classes, clubs, social outings. I know they are skipping meals. I plan to bring up the topic of meals/nutrition during fall break which is this weekend. When I was in college, gaining the freshman 15 was a thing... now most kids I know are losing weight! |
| My kids school has amazing food and they still lose weight. You walk more, people tend to be fit, and you’re stressed => losing weight |
| He's into fitness and used to cook a lot at home so we made sure he had a kitchen. He does a mix of cooking and shakes and dining hall. Kids seem generally very fit and into nutrition, much more so than back in my day! |
| Mine is at a school that lets you swap a dining hall meal for a meal at one of the campus cafes and that's been great. The buffet style is fine, but it's nicer to skip the premade stuff at least once a day. |
| Mine has been fine but he needs to eat a lot. He dances 12 hours week. |
|
Mine gets unlimited meals and one swap a day on top of it. He does have trouble eating at times. Sometimes he doesn't have time to eat until later in the evening and then he has fewer options.
He is active in a club and they have a lot of meetings. The first few weeks were difficult because he had a lot of "rush" functions for clubs. |
| My DD is an excellent cook but she cannot use the communal kitchen because it is always covered in filth |
So are you paying for a meal plan and groceries for everyone? If they don't like the dining hall that's not where they are packing up the weight.... My son, last year as Freshman, had the unlimited meal plan and enjoyed the food. Did not gained any weight. This is his second year, and we're doing meals on campus and groceries for his apartment, still hasn't gained extra weight. He does a lot of walking between classes and goes to the gym to lift. |
| Both of mine nearly starved as freshmen. It’s gotten worse, colleges tightening their budgets. I do a grocery delivery or pickup every week or two. Many days they have nothing to eat. |
Mine too at Northwestern. The food is horrid. DC losing weight. I've started approving DoorDash and Whole Foods runs. |
