| Just wondering. My kid is debating dropping a class. |
| 15. Today is the last day to drop a class. |
| Mine took 14 first semester of her first year after dropping a class. She did well, but learned she was not eligible for Dean's List with fewer than 15 hours per semester. If that is important to your child, that may be a consideration. |
| Just remember OP, they’re tough on UVA undergrads about proceeding timely towards graduation. That’s why their 4 year graduation rate is so high. |
|
“Students are expected to complete their degrees in no more than 8 full-time semesters (fall/spring) and may only enroll in a 9th semester under special circumstances. Transfer students have proportionately fewer semesters depending on the number of semesters completed prior to admission. College students are permitted to take up to 16 credits on a part-time basis toward the degree.” |
| 14. |
If she is over 15, no worries. |

15. No Dean's List if under 15 as someone else noted, but that isn't going to make or break anyone for one semester. Can always take a class over the summer if needed.
Why are they planning to drop? If the load already seems like too much, probably better to drop than get a bad grade, but wouldn't drop to 12-13 without a good reason because it gets harder to catch back up. |
Not OP, but wondering… my son has credit from 4 AP classes from HS. If he were to not take 15 credits one semester, would he still not be eligible for Dean’s list even though he’s well on track to graduate early? |
Nope, need 15 credits of graded work in the preceding semester. |
|
OP here and freshman is taking 18 hours of mostly STEM courses. Went to a private high school that had 3-4 hours of homework a night and mandatory sports and says that this is a breeze in comparison. Doing well so far.
It makes me nervous. Thanks for the responses. |
If it’s a breeze by comparison why is he dropping a class? |
Not sure he is. We talked to him this week and learned that he is taking 18 hours and asked him to perhaps consider easing into college and taking 18 in the spring instead. |
The Engagements count for 4 and depending on which ones they definitely don't equate to four "real" credit hours. Just something to keep in mind. |
