Listen to your school, the top kids will have excellent SATs as well.

do not go to UChicago unless you really want to. your college counselor doesn't know you

Why are you asking us? Your college counseling should be discussing this with you. We have no way of knowing what universities favor kids like this from YOUR high school. Maybe Vanderbilt likes your school (they hate ours). Maybe Cornell does (they like ours).

I'm a parent who has had seniors at two different top privates and you really can't go online for random info like this.

JMU a reach, VCU a safety.

Kids are loving CMU now. Not sure what’s they’re doing different than 10 years ago.

Also JHU for humanities is underrated and possible w lower grades and high schools. ED helpful

If you are prestige hunting (which it sounds like you are) then you need to go to Chicago. It's the one top20 that will take middle of the class kids from our private who either want prestige or are academically minded kids who for some reason or another have a lower GPA. In fact, all 5 who are attending this year from our school this year were outside of the top20%.

You're going to have a really hard time with other top20s if you're middle of the class because the kids above yours will also have SATs in the 1500s and colleges don't care if it's 1530 or 1560.

Do you really have to be the “don’t post poster.” Here’s a suggestion: don’t post.

Sounds like Chicago would be the highest status place that would like your DC's profile. Why is he hesitant? That info could help us suggest other options.

I'd think for this student a massive state flagship might be interesting.

Depending on the awards, maybe Brown or a SLAC.

Brown is not going to be excited about an applicant who is middle of the class in terms of GPA. SATs are good, but tons of other kids have that.

Yes, but if applicant is a boy and has big / important awards, Brown might work.

Brown deferred the top5 in the class boy who applied as a humanities major from our T20 private this year and only admitted him RD. Yes he was eventually admitted but they didn't jump for him REA (and therefore took the chance at losing him to other schools).

Brown is not a given by any means.

Actually I should re-phrase this. Brown is a no-way in hell for a middle of the pack kid. There really is no other top20 that wants middle-of-the-pack kids from a top private.
