I got flack for not serving the kids enough green vegetables today.
They had spinach in smoothies at breakfast, and guacamole with lunch. They ate plenty of other fruits and veggies of other colors. Is that enough? |
| If cucumbers count. 1 |
Is that enough? Not sure. Is that better than 90% of the kids I see? Yes. |
| I don’t think avocados count because I think kids are mainly not getting enough fiber and that’s why we’re supposed to give them green vegetables. And I guess some vitamins but I think the fiber is the main thing. |
A serving of avocado has about the same amount of fiber as a serving of broccoli, and way more fiber than a serving of spinach. But three is also plenty of fiber in fruit and other colored vegetables. I kind of agree that avocado isn't in the same category as broccoli or kale, but I don't think it's because of fiber. |
| At least 3. We do smoothies with leafy greens, salad at lunch, green juice at snack time, and green beans, broc, asparagus, sauteed kale or another leafy green side at dinner (always 2 veg sides). |
| OP who was giving you flak for this? |
+1 The only people who know what my kid eats on a day-to-day basis are the ones who live with me, namely, my spouse. |
Their mom, my sister. We had a family gathering yesterday, and I did most of the cooking. |
Not even your kids? Wow. Tell your sister to bring her own damn spinach next time. |

Greens and other vegetables were important when people didn't have access to multi vitamins.
Not so much anymore. The most beneficial part is not the fiber or vitamins anyway, it's the flavonoids, etc. |
3-5 a day |

For my kid who will eat anything -- 1 or 2, usually something like spinach in an omelette for breakfast and then salad or peas or other green veggie as a side at dinner.
For my kid who is picky and especially averse to a lot of vegetables -- 0. The only green veggie she will eat is peas. Sometimes I'll sneak some spinach into a smoothie but if she sees it, she won't drink it and she claims she can taste it. I honestly don't think it matters. Lots of vegetables aren't green. We do lots of carrots, red peppers, cauliflower, parsnip, radishes, and beats. Also sweet potatoes, pumpkin, mushrooms, and tomatoes (not technically vegetables but nutrient rich and work as "veggie sides"). |
| My kids eat maybe 2 green vegetables a week. I shoot for one vegetable a day and 2 fruits a day. They are teens and it’s very difficult to get them to eat things they don’t want to eat. |

3 kids. 2 of them may eat 2-3 daily. The other kid hasn’t had anything green in years.
They’re old enough to feed themselves and buy their own food. I can’t force feed anyone. |
