Supervisor has asked me to use my vacation time instead of sick leave

Anonymous
I am 20 hours away from maxing out my vacation accrual. I get notices that I am getting close but have been monitoring it and have never exceeded the max.

Yesterday I called out sick because I was not feeling well. My supervisor asked me if I would use my vacation time instead of sick leave. I told her no and now she is giving me attitude. Was I in the wrong???

BTW, I rarely call out sick and I also have a lot of sick time accrued.

Did you ask why she asked this?

My guess is that your job may be on the line. They dont have to pay out your sick leave if they fire you but they do have to pay you for your vacation days.

I find it strange that you didn't ask her why. That's why this seems trollish.

Your AL maxes out?
Clearly you need to take more time off.

But no you weren’t wrong.

Of course not.

Were you sick or just calling in sick? Maybe accrued vacation liability on the balance sheet?

Was your sick day right after a holiday or other vacation day? At my work we’ve been advised that calling out before/after a weekend or holiday is subject to scrutiny and/or discipline

I think this is likely it. And I wouldn't assume she thinks you were lying about being sick, rather she may have been under pressure regarding absences around holidays. Even if she's not not mad at you, it's possible some frustration over that pressure is coming through.

I wouldn't fret over this unless there are other signals of problems.

Depends on the state. I.am in NY and at my company, everybody who quits does it after they come back from vacation.

If you are still sick, get an online doctor note and submit it.

Say you’d rather save your vacation time for vacation and sick you are sick you think sick leave is the appropriate leave to take. I’d put this in email.

DWs company did something like this. They were concerned about the accused vacation liability and did a high pressure campaign for people to take a few days off. She ended up getting laid off a few months later.
