Getting into St. Albans

not drinking egg nog and not affiliated with STA arts program. My sons (plural) think it is cool. Their friends do indeed think choristers are cool. I have no reason to say so otherwise as our sons have not been choristers. The choristers are respected. They are not automatically nerds or outcasts. Friends of theirs have been in the Choir (the real one). Very few leave, until their voices change so don't send untrue messages on an anonymous board.

Maybe your son (if you have one) doesn't appreciate chorale or like it or think it is cool, but we have boys over here CONSTANTLY and my DH and I actually talk to them. Yeah maybe they are all putting on an Eddie Haskell show for us. Though I doubt it as we know which teachers they don't like, habits of coaches, and more stuff that isn't always good.

Maybe your son (if you have one) just isn't "cool" enough to know what is and isn't cool.

Chorale is a popular activity in the Upper School for a number of reasons, including: the quality of the vocal music is good; It fulfills the arts requirement necessary for graduation; every few years they take a neat overseas trip; and it is co-Ed. I don't necessarily think it is seen as "cool" though, if only because it is such a big group and anyone can do it (you don't have to try out)--but popular in terms of numbers, yes.

I can tell you from personal experience that the show Glee has made those who sing, especially boys with the talent, joie de vivre, and confidence to sing in choirs, a cappella groups, etc. if not "cool," then definitely respected and admired.

Maybe in your experience but not mine. I do not know any teenage boys that watch Glee or that the show has made it respected and admired.

If your boys like to sing, great. Every boy with a talent should be respected for that talent.

But do your sons go to St. Albans?

My son goes to StA. I can't say he watches Glee, but I can't say he has EVER distinguished the choristers from other kids in the school. They are part of the community, period. He has chorister friends and non chorister friends. He supports their participation in choir, and they support the activities he does. Almost all the kids go to every theater production and choral event. Soccer kids go to football games. Football kids go to soccer games. I don't know. I don't find any degree of separation among kids based on the activities they pursue.

Not that it matters, but another STA mom here. Form A son loves Glee!

Your son sounds younger ( eg the references to the choristers, who are younger--8th grade or less). In the Upper School (grades 9-12), all the talents are respected, including significant musical talent, but the idea that chorale is "way cool" is not accurate for the Upper School. Look, it's all boys and teenagers, it's not the NY School of Performing Arts--being great at sports is still the coolest thing.

Also, it's pure BS that almost all of the boys attend each (evening?) choral event. I doubt if any attend voluntarily if they aren't into choral music. The choristers aren't ostracized and CBA choir isn't considered cool.

Most upper school boys, my son included, can't wait until they can dump chorale participation.

PP, totally agree. The choristers aren't considered cool, but no one is ostracized.

Okay, I've had enough with the debate about whether the Choristers are considered "cool" or "uncool". It's a matter of opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Let's just hope that all boys are treated with respect.

The 4th grade test that is administered by the school consists of 3 sections: verbal, math and logic (IQ). Hope this helps.

Gee, thanks for stating the obvious.

15:03 here. Thanks for the replies about the 4th grade test to the two posters who replied. I am still confused however, as one poster said it was the OLSAT, which is a school appitute test, and the other poster stated it was an IQ (if I'm understanding it correctly.) It is some combination of both?? Also, I think the OLSAT is only an hour or so, which seems a bit short to me.
