Sometimes statements of this type are made at admissions events or on podcasts etc - but it's difficult to track them all.
Let's do it here: Have you heard an AO or other official college rep say "don't submit a score lower than" X at Y College? If so, what did you hear? |
| Tulane - don’t send scores unless 33+ ACT or 1460+ SAT |
Early Decision City. |
| UMD. Don't submit an SAT below 1380. |
|
UMD, from Ws, don't submit SAT below 1470-1520.
|
| Thanks for starting this OP. It is a useful thread. |
Don't agree that AO's are all saying that or with that sentiment. If the kid has a great all around package (EC's, sports and all of that), but may be a point or even two below the median - still submit. My kid did and got accepted into a Top 10 and 20 and both were TO schools. I think the risk is if you don't submit they could conclude your score is way lower than it actually was. So, in my opinion, submit if close to median but slightly under as opposed to TO if rest of package is impressive. Some can disagree, but that was our personal experience last cycle. |
How so? People can post whatever made up numbers they feel like. |
Are you referring to Maryland? |
| OP here, please also site your source. |

Last cycle, Vanderbilt emissions officer told us as part of their August tours not to submit below a 34. “Don’t submit anything that you would not think improves your admission chances.”
33 is neutral and does not improve. |
Did they say anything about SAT scores? |
| so basically AO not concerned if student is able to keep up with classes but rather they want to keep the score "up" artificially inflated....otherwise 1400 would be ok everywhere |
Yes. Everyone involved (parents, colleges, often students too) cares more about rankings than education. |
| Vanderbilt said 1510 or above |
