| Does anyone have familiarity with this course? Are the teachers good? I know that reputationally, it is more difficult than the courses taught separately, but DC says that her friends with separate classes have already done copious amounts of note taking and reading, and they have barely got started. |
| On the *First Day* (2nd) y'all were mad they didn't do anywork now they are doing too much, Is an honors class if they can't handle it they can switch. |
Reading is fundamental. I was not the poster that complained about lack of work on the first/second day. In fact, I responded to say that my daughter had plenty of work. If you read what I posted, I'm concerned that there is not a lot of work assigned yet, although other classes that are not the combined world civ courses are apparently ploughing through. My daughter specifically told her counselor that she did not want this class (because of teacher reputation), and now doesn't want to switch out because she's worried that after missing a week of the other classes, she would be seriously behind and there won't be a way to catch up. |
| Why was she put into a class that she said she didn't want? that's odd. |
Seriously behind and can't catch up after less than a week? Get real. |
She can only go by what her friends are telling her. For the history part, the ones having classes on odd days have 6-8 pages of notes from the first two days of classes (meaning there will be another 3-4 pages of note taking from today). They have completed some reading assignments (I don't know the details) in the English classes. So yeah, assuming she can get the change in time to start her class next Tuesday, she will have a lot of catching up to do. |
I'm assuming it's because they're working around her world language and elective, each of which only has one session, and this was probably the easiest to fit in. |
| Get ready for work. They are starting a group project today and some annotation is due Monday. My kid is in the class. |
The teachers are phenomenal. Every student we spoke to raved about them. Said it was their favorite class. I am trusting them. |
|
The teachers are phenomenal, truly two of the best that any of my children have had from kindergarten through college. The English/literature teacher is particularly outstanding.
There is a lot of work, but it's not unreasonable if your child keeps up with it. It will prepare your child for AP and college-level work, which is an asset. Just don't fall behind. If your child took AAP English and History in middle school, they should be very well-prepared for the course. I don't have personal experience with AAP at Rocky Run, but I've heard the English and History teachers at Rocky Run are just as good as the AAP English and History teachers at Franklin and Carson, so I stand by my claim. |
|
Thank you both. I will tell her to hang in there.
So far, her impressions are that the History teacher is grumpy, and that the English teacher is nice. Both are apparently wordy. She is a child of few words, so that part definitely does not appeal to her. |
My child is in the class. They haven’t mentioned grumpiness in the history teacher - only sarcastic wit. He’s funny as hell apparently. The English teacher is also known as being really sweet. I’m worried about workload too but I think my child can handle it. |
????Trying to figure out how to teach history and English without a lot of words. |
lol. |
LOL, I thought that, but didn't say anything. I think what she meant was that there is a lot of extraneous information, and sometimes it's hard to tell what is relevant to the discussion, and what's a cool but tangentially relevant at best factoid. |
