At what age did you realize your son was going to be super tall (6’3” or taller)?
We obviously have no idea yet but we have a 5 year old who is head and shoulders taller than his peers. He is currently 55 pounds and 50” tall. Genetically - mom is in the 90th percentile for women (5’8”) but dad is probably average height (5’10”). When did you know your son was going to be super tall or were you just surprised at the end? |
| My son was a super slow grower who was always the smallest on his sports team until senior year of high school. He was so behind we visited an endocrinologist and did testing. He’s now over 6 feet and still growing. A little surprised because he was such a shorty all his life, but then again my brothers are all 6’3 or taller and they didn’t reach full height until post high school either. |

I mean, maybe I’m wrong but I already feel that way about my third child. He’s four months old and in the 99% for both height and weight and is currently wearing 9-12 month clothes (and some are getting tight). He’ll be in the 12-18 month clothes before he turns 5 months old. My other two were nothing like this - one slightly above average height consistently, and one rather tall, consistently around the 75-80 percentile, but like regular-tall not insane-tall.
My husband is slightly above average height (5’11”) but I’m very, very tall - 5’10” - and so is my mother. There are several men in my family over 6’3”. I would guess he’s going to be very, very tall. |
| In elementary school, both of my kids were always taller than their friends, even their “tall” friends. Now one is 20 and he’s 6’ even (so tall, but not REALLY tall) and the other is 17 and is 6’3”. |
| my 5'4" high school freshman graduated 6'4" - so around age 16. |
| Some kids are tall early and then even out. Your son does not have the genes to be super tall. |
| My son was 99 percent when he was born, stayed there, and is now 6'2 at 13. |

Watching my teen sons and their friends grow up, I don’t think there is any way to truly predict this based on childhood height, TBH. It all depends on puberty.
One of my sons was an average height child, teeny tiny freshman and ended up tall (6’2”). The other was an average height child, average through puberty, & ended up average height (5’10”). DH and I are 5’5” and 5’11”. Usually boys who were tall as children end up tall, but not always. Seems like sometimes they just stop growing early and end up average height at most. Same with the boys who are short during childhood (usually end up short but not always). From ages 12-15ish it is all over the place with boys & you can’t really predict anything. One could be nearly done growing while the other hasn’t even started yet. Sometimes people have a kid that doesn’t seem to “match” at all height-wise. We know two short parents who have a 6’2” son. IMO your DS being tall is a good sign for being tall later- but that is really all it is- a sign. By no means is it entirely predictive. The only kids that are highly highly likely going to be tall are the ones who have 2 tall parents IME. And even then, there could always be a surprise. |
| Never. My son's Dad is less than 5'8" and I'm average at 5'4". Son is around 5'9" and might end up being around 5'10" |
| eye roll, OP |

I love these threads, they are so revealing of biases that we all know but are rarely expressed. It’s always asking how tall the boys will be (almost never girls).
They are almost as telling as all of the threads asking the likelihood of baby’s eyes being blue (and never asking the same of brown). |
| Never! |
This. Both kids (one boy, one girl) were in the 99% for a while, and heads and shoulders above peers in ES and the start of MS. Boy stopped at 6', girl at 5'6" |
+100. |
| My sons are in their early 30’s and the tall discussion obsession were non-existent back then. They were both big babies (over 10 pounds), but I didn’t notice their height potential until high school when they stood next to their friends. My younger DS continued to grow in college. |
