I am currently seeing 498 teacher positions available on the MCPS careers site. This is more than usually for this time of year.
Many Special Ed positions. Are there any concerns that staff have heard a schools this summer? |
Heard a what? |
| Not in the DMV but where I live in New England there is a lot of turnover in special Ed. It's really frustrating work. Not because of the kids, but because of all the paperwork, meetings...angry administrators, angry parents/guardians... |
352 are full time positions. Not really hearing anything, I guess it is the same as any year, for the last few years at least. Yes, classes will be large, combined etc... |
| Teachers are fed up with world salad from mcps over security and safety concerns in high schools |
| You are concerned, so apply for a job. |
| I'm a newly certified teacher who gave up trying to get a job in my subject of certification and accepted a Special Education job instead |
Better to go be a food delivery person instead |
| A lot of speech jobs open too |
|
New teachers are low paid, over worked, have no job security, no protection against malbehavior that can be dangerous many times, no one tells new teachers the unwritten rules such as if you expect support or student respect then you are sol and admin will blame everything on new teachers because they are easy (and confused at the ish show ). Lastly they have been known to fib the the unemployment office when they fire new teachers.
Other than that. Yeah teaching is a perfect career. |
Where I live they are not allowed to pay special ed teachers more due to union rules. Pay goes by seniority only. Sorry, but the special Ed teacher's job is infinitely harder than the art teacher's, and they should be compensated accordingly. |
| Mcps got more funding to hire these teachers but no one wants the job. |
I was in Frederick Co and mentioned to some teachers there that they could get more pay in MCPS. They just laughed and said “no way”. Man, MCPS rep has really fallen if that’s the response from other districts. 20 years ago people were often a bit jealous of you told them you were in MCPS. Admin, safety, traffic, housing costs, etc. just make teaching in MCPS less appealing now especially in the high need schools and positions. There is just not enough support from admin and refusal to deal with misbehavior. |
Nailed it |
| They were giving hiring bonuses to sped teachers a couple of years ago, right after COVID. This is why. |
