I found this info really fascinating. Any thoughts on what it means for the implications for the new regional magnets?

No, but what it shows me is that we are wasting crazy amounts of money for 6% of our students. |
Who are from a handful of schools. Large number of resource grabbers from Churchill, Wooton, Clarksburg, and Northwest. A little surprised about the last two schools. I can see why it is inequitable. |
Why do so many kids from Churchill, WJ, and Wootton go to RMIB? |
But hardly any from Whitman. |
Geography? |
My DD got into RMIB from Whitman but did not end up going. She knows at least 3 of her friends who got into RMIB, Poolesville and Blair, who did not go either. Long commute and presence of great friends and cohort at Whitman, most likely the reasons. |
I am also wondering if Pyle Middle School does little to prepare and encourage students to apply to magnet programs. Our Pyle counselor did not encourage us to accept the magnet offer. |
Whitman has the best course offerings. Little need to go elsewhere. |
I can not imagine they too Blair. |
Top Blair |
Who would want to go to Blair’s magnet if they have a great school and great friends locally? I say this as someone who would be happy to send my kids to Blair, but it is our homeschool. This is the whole idea behind the regional model (although I understand Whitman will actually be in Blair’s region). There are a few families out there who will chase the “best” and are very concerned about magnets being watered down, but most people want strong programming (whether homeschool or magnet) that is nearby. |
Whitman parents spent over a million to avoid silver spring, why bus their kids there? If they wanted their kids to go to Blair they could have bought the one of the nicest homes in Takoma Park IBs opposed to a starter home IB at Whitman. Hell many of the houses cost 2x+ the nicest and most expensive homes IB at Blair. Think about that, the choice not to go was made long ago. |
Well that too |
Still, it's notable that Churchill sends 77 students to Blair SMCS, while Whitman only sends 19. |
