I have heard that swimmers get to pick or coaches select - or a combination. What does your team do? Pros/cons? |
Our past coach always asked swimmers what they wanted to swim. I have no idea what our new coach did this year (my kid is an alternate for multiple events, so wouldn't have been asked) but the lineup for DCs age group is exactly what I would have predicted the kids would pick based on past years/preferences so it's likely they had input. |
Top two on the ladder for each age group pick their events and then following that coaches fill in. |
Ladder. Fair. Done. |
Of course, but when kids are top of ladder in more than the two event max (NVSL), decisions are required. On our team, it’s swimmer’s choice. |
Swimmer's choice (in ladder order) for our team. It takes longer to get done but it is the most fair approach. |
Coaches assign everything in order to maximize performance of the team (MCSL). |
⬆️ This. Team rep contacts each swimmer in ladder order and works the way down. |
Ditto. But they send out a google forms in advance and ask likely divisionals swimmers to list the strokes they would prefer to do, in order, if they had a choice. |
+1. DS is top of the ladder in every event plus IM for his team. He got to choose. |
Our team also lets the top swimmers on the ladder choose if they are top in multiple events. I think this is more than fair. |
What league? In NVSL, it would be exceedingly rare to not solely use the ladder. Those atop the ladder in multiple strokes rank what they want to swim and get top choice. |
Nvsl:
Our coaches ask everyone to rank their events in priority order. Then they assign events by working down the ladders and if someone is in the top in multiple events using their preferences. |
Has anyone else’s team not announced yet which swimmers are going to divisional and which strokes?
We’re still waiting and it has me anxious! |
um, we just had a coach call a parent on our team and ask their kid to step down so another, older, kid could swim an event. No joke.
This same kid was also told he couldn't swim his top preference because the coaches wanted to give the slot to a team rep's kid whose only faster time in the event had resulted in a DQ..... |
