Should cars be banned in DC?

Berlin is close to voting on a referendum to allow people just 12 car trips per year in the city.

I figure this might solve the problem of congress being too old if everyone has to take a bike.

It will be interesting to watch all the cyclists in DC when the temperature is 25 degrees with a wind chill temp of 18.
And, you expect the Congress members who live in VA or MD - 20+ miles from DC to bike to work?

If you want an age limit for Congressmen, then you should work toward amending the Constitution to do that, rather than creating bizarre laws that don't address the actual problem that you want to solve.

Nope. Not unless the public transportation system can become a lot better than it is — particularly outside of NW.
I say this as someone who rarely uses a car.

People do bike in those conditions. I am not sure this is the burn you think it is.

Absolutely.

I want DC to be a runaway experiment in lib nuttiness. Cars should definitely be banned for anything but local government officials.

Paris has banned cars from certain sections of the city. It’s quiet and peaceful and I hope it lasts forever. Paris, however, has excellent public transportation. As does Berlin.

DC likes to take away bus routes and reduce metro service.

People will be a lot fitter and thinner

And before people say that dc is thin…it’s still bigger than Paris or Milan

Even in the umc community - dc people pack a solid 20+ lbs more than their ses counterparts in Western Europe

A great idea

Better and more affordable.

This will literally never happen in the US. Congress would not allow DC to do this. They would overturn this law or pull funding in response.

Congress will be exempt. Duh.

And their staff. And anyone with a special permit who is friends with a government official.

Anyone who thinks this has even a 0.000000001 percent chance of happening needs to step out of their GGWash/DC subreddit echo chamber. Congress will never, ever let this happen, just like it will never, ever allow congestion pricing.

There's a better chance that Congressional Republicans make DC rip out the bike lanes and take down the traffic cameras.
