Cake slices

Anonymous
Bakery near me sells only cake, whole or by the slice. The cakes are delicious but pricey ($12/slice) and the slices are never the same size: one time it’s enough for just one person, sometimes two, rarely 3…Have you ever seen bakeries do it that way? I don’t get why they don’t just do it by weight or find a system so it’s always the expected quantity.

I bet if you called you could get them to sell you a half unsliced.

Ask them, OP. Clearly it's expensive because their methods are so incompetent they can't make money any other way.

Sounds like it's some HS kid or something slicing the cakes and I bet the owner would like to know the slices aren't uniform.

Wow, how big is a slice for $12? That's the price for a half cake in many bakeries.

Yes, I have bakeries do this. Can you pick out your slice or ask before they cut?

You cannot pick bc they cut it with a special knife on the spot (the cakes are very tall and huge). Next time dh said he’s going to ask for a big slice and see what happens. For me considering the cost the size should be consistent.

Are the slice sizes different within the same cake, or cakes have different size slices? Like a piece of chocolate serves two but a slice of almond serves one? If so it may be the shape/size of the cake pan and its structure or the cost of ingredients.

If the same cake is sliced so all the slices aren’t the same size, or multiples of the same size (1/16, 1/8/,1/4,1/2 a cake) that’s weird. And sloppy.

The first time we got one it was huge, the two of us could not finish it. The second time it was tiny. The third time it was a good amount for two people to finish in one go. For us it’s a nice treat bc we don’t eat out much and I’d like to support the business as they really make great cakes, but I was not happy with the tiny slice!

The cakes are all completely different ingredients but the same tall multilayered structure.

Just "invest" in the whole cake. You will save money. Freeze it.

If the prices work out, I'd second this.
Frozen cake often improves it as well.
Most men have ever met prefer frozen cold cake, while most women prefer warm cake. Interesting gender difference there. I like both just depends.

Are you nonbinary?

You should ask them how they cut their cakes and mention that you've noticed the size of the slices vary. If you do it in a friendly, supportive way, they may listen to you.

You could even mention that there are bakery tools for ensuring even slices. They need a slice marker (a round piece with spokes that you can use to mark the top of the cake with lines where the slices should be cut) and to make sure the knives or slicers they are using for cutting are very sharp and that the person who cuts (who is often not a baker but a front of house person) is trained in doing this evenly and cleanly.

It sounds like they are just eyeballing it which is very amateurish for a bakery selling $12 slices and an especially bad idea for tall layer cakes.

You should tell them.
