Rain

We are finally getting out of the high heat this weekend and moving into more opportunity for storms. Do Saturday meets get cancelled and rescheduled for lightning or do they just stop the meet wherever it is and award points based on that time.

You wait in your car until it’s clear.

Sure, but for how long? Wasn't ASR cancelled last year halfway through because no end in sight?

Aren’t storms forecasted for tomorrow afternoon? I wouldn’t worry about the morning.

as long as it takes. Storms are typically in the afternnon so shouldn't be an issue in the morning.

ASR was different because it was in the evening so time was limited. I also believe the host pool did not have lights so they were very limited on how late they could go.

Our pool is 30 mins from the last thunder. Depends if we can claim it was a flight from DCA or lifeguards decide it was thunder.

Agreed, ASR was different because of sunset and no lighting options. For tomorrow hopefully the storms hold off until later in the day and if the officials run an efficient meet everything should go quickly.

I’ll be refereeing a NVSL meet tomorrow. Our pool policy is that the pool deck needs to be cleared for 30 minutes after any thunder. The reality is that from when the pool deck is open until we get everyone in place and ready to go is another 5-10 minutes. So every incident of thunder is a 40 minute meet delay. But we will keep going trying to hold the meet with any necessary thunder delays until the meet is done.

Got it and realize storms are more likely in the evening. Is there a point when a meet will be canceled or rescheduled for weather. Is this a team rep call or a league call?

In my 15 yrs of doing this, we have never canceled an A meet.

It isn’t a league wide call since the conditions could vary across the league, both weather conditions and pool rules. It would be a decision of the referee and the two teams’ reps. But it is very unlikely for a Saturday meet since the teams have all day for the weather to clear.

There are some pools with members who will bring out the pitchforks and torches if the meet goes long.

This. There are some pools where just waiting all day to get the meet in is not an option. This is why A meets are in the mornings, thunder and lightning are generally not a problem and meets can go on in the rain as long as the bottom of the pool is visible.

+1. Different pools have different bylaws and stakeholder expectations. For a good portion, pool operations do not center on the swim team.

Relay carnival won't be cancelled but all this rain today promises to make for a muddy mess tomorrow.
