Occipital Lobe Bump

Anonymous
I seem to have a small pea sized bump that has formed on that knob at the base of your skull that is the occipital lobe. I noticed this about a week ago when that area suddenly became painful like a bruise and really tender to touch and I had not hit my head so I knew it could not have been as result of injury. I thought maybe it was a cyst or an ingrown hair but I had my husband check and there wasn’t anything visible there. Now the pain has subsided and I feel this little pea sized lump right on top of the bone and it feels immobile and under the skin. It does feel smaller than it did last week so whatever it is maybe was inflamed and calmed down. I guess I’ll need to get it checked out to rule out anything sinister but has anyone had something like this? It literally came out of nowhere and while I don’t get frequent headaches I did have a two day headache around June 6 that I could not shake and chalked it up to stress. But at the time I remember thinking this is unusual bc if I do get a headache it is temporary so now I’m wondering if that is somehow related and now I’m worried about brain cancer of course.

This may not pertain to you, but I had this years ago. I went to the doctor and it was stress related. I was pregnant at the time and didn’t want to take any meds, so got a full body massage and it went away.

I think you need to book yourself a massage ASAP. Good luck.

Thanks. I did just find this old thread which describes exactly what I’m experiencing. Is this OP still out there??

It’s probably a shotty lymph node. Generally nothing if it resolves.

OK so your occipital lobe is part of your brain, underneath your skull. You aren't going to feel a bump that is on your brain from the outside -- plus brain tumors are not "bumps" like that.

Sounds like you are referring to the occipital bone of your skull. I guess a bone tumor could technically form there but that seems extremely unlikely, and probably wouldn't start out with a bruised feeling. It seems there are several potential causes for a lump or bump back there so get it checked out but do not panic.

Probably a lymph node

No need to speculate - you do want to get this checked out though.

Without a medical history and an exam plus any labs that may be determined necessary there’s no way at all that there can even be educated speculation.

I get swollen lymph nodes there that sound exactly like what you’re describing, a tender lump that shrinks gradually. It will likely go away fully over a couple weeks. Anything your body is fighting can cause lymph node swelling, from viruses to bug bites. Get it checked out but I’d bet a lot of money it’s a simple lymph node doing its job.

A swollen lymph node can mean many things. Especially if it’s without other symptoms and lasts a while, it deserves an exam.

You really do need to see your general practitioner, dear.

Agreed, but OP is describing that it started tender and shrunk pretty quickly. Getting it checked out is a good idea, but there's really no need to panic.
