Rehoboth beach- cost and the economy

Ok so I get it. It's not 1995 anymore and prices have gone up. But I swear prices have doubled since we were last here maybe 3 years ago.

Umbrellas are twenty a day to rent, chairs are 10. Small crap like funland charging parents the same 3 tickets to stand in the Carousel as if they were a rider if they are holding their toddler on a horse (parents standing used to be free.) A drink is 4.50 and no free refills pretty much across the board. Parking is now 4.50 an hour. A basic soft serve cone is 7.00

Maybe they are thinking they can charge more and the crowds will thin out and it will be more enjoyable for everyone but damnnnnnn it's not an inexpensive few day excursion anymore

Yeah, travel everywhere has gotten expensive, not just Rehoboth.

We have always brought our own chairs and umbrellas to the beach. We have always grocery shopped and cooked or prepped 2 out of the 3 meals a day at least. Yes I know some people refuse to cook on vacation, but eating out for every meal is cost prohibitive and not as healthy. Do I love doing dishes on vacation? No, but I also don’t love spending 1k on restaurant food. It adds up!

We do go out to eat sometimes and we do get ice cream out a couple of times, but we can also get a box of popsicles for the same price as one cone out so we can have a treat on the porch and my kids are just as happy. Memories still being made. So my advice is to put a little work into it and you won’t feel so price gouged!

This is everywhere. Beach places make the majority of their revenue in 3 months. They have to make enough in those few months to stay in business. I’m going to Rehoboth in August. I think the room was $650 a night. I love Rehoboth and keep going back, but it would be cheaper to fly to Cancun for the beach.

Ocean city has free parking. Bring your own chairs and umbrella and a cooler. You don’t have to rent everything.

That is not expensive. Most resorts are triple that.

We drive to the park and ride and take the cheap bus into the beach. We budget for Grotto Pizza and ice cream ($100-150) and do a few rides at Funland. We use towels on the beach and swim for free. Then we find shade on the boardwalk and people watch. Sure you can find ways to spend money but it’s optional. We always have a great time.

Minimum wage is now $15 per hour in DE. Of course, prices must increase to cover the new minimum wages.

Funland is one of the best deals on the east coast!

We have a place in Downtown Rehoboth. Parking fees have gone up a bit, but that's only a factor if you're staying somewhere outside of town and have to drive in. Hotel and rental costs have soared.

Umbrellas/$20 and soft serve cone/$7 have been the prices for years.

Funland is still a good deal. Maybe just one adult could hold a kid on the carousel. You don't need two. It's still just one ticket per person for the carousel - I think around 55 cents per ticket these days?

Inflation has been rapidly rising since 2020. It's not just Rehoboth.

+1 Fire up the grill for a few dinners or head out to Route 1 to pick up less expensive take out, pack a cooler for lunch on the beach, and hand your kids treats from your freezer when you head out to the boardwalk for evening fun.

We sometimes start the slow cooker and rice cooker before heading to the beach so we have a great meal that night. We're just over a block to the beach, so one of us will pop back to the house after lunch to grab popsicles to have on the beach.

Don’t even consider Martha’s Vineyard. A $2500 weekly rental is now $9000 plus $450 to clean plus taxes for an August week. I was priced out before Covid and prices rose during Covid.

Head to Wildwood, NJ!

OP, I get it, except for the Funland part.

That place is a freaking bargain, and has barely changed in 50 years. It's a quarter for your toddler to ride the boats, and has been forever.

Umbrellas have been $20 for at least the past 5 years.
Drink water.
Send only one parent on the carousel to save 60 cents (lol).

We go to Rehoboth all the time.
Never rented umbrella or chairs. We take our own.
Ice cream is expensive yes but it’s a vacation. We ride our bikes downtown to avoid paying for parking.
