summer swim volunteer points

Does your pool require parents to meet a minimum # volunteer points? How does your system work? -- how many are required, is it per parent, family or swimmer, how are points counted and what pool?

6 points per family. Some jobs reserved for new families. Timing and officiating is 1 point at A and B meets. Certain non-meet related jobs are multiple points like banquet organizer or donut delivery person

Donut delivery is more points than timing or being an official for hours at a meet?! That’s crazy. Is the donut delivery person paying out of their own pocket or something?

Yes. Our NVSL pool maps out all the job shifts required to make the season work (e.g., A meet timer, B meet timer, pep rally dinner helper, etc.). Each shift is assigned a point value based on the time commitment. The total number of season volunteer points is then divided by the number of families on the team to determine how many points each family needs to fill. NVSL summer swim is unique in that it’s 100 percent volunteer-run (except for coaches). So, if you join the team, you’re agreeing to help execute the season. Our system is designed distribute the workload as equally as possible among participating families.

Tanterra does this. I think it’s around 17 points per family. Feels unfair to families where both parents are working during the summer.

So who do you suggest does the required jobs? If it’s unfair to ask working parents to volunteer, yet most roles are required to run a meet, what is your recommendation?

20 points or pay $400. No excuses. It worked the past 3 years. No one even bothers to ask if they have to volunteer.

Our volunteers received a gift card if the volunteered more than 5 times last year.

I don't need a gift card, I just need you to not be listening to your podcast for the 5th meet in a row while I am sweating it out on the deck! I am pro mandatory volunteer hours, and no, picking up the donuts should not equal a meets worth of timing or stroke and turn or clerk of course unless you are paying for said donuts.

Tanterra has plenty of opportunities to earn points beyond working meets. Ask a rep if you need ideas.

Our requirement is six credits per family. Jobs have different point values depending on how time intensive they are, but most are worth one point at a B meet and .5 points at an A meet. There’s no monetary fine if you miss your total, but families who are low on points are the first ones getting a call from the volunteer coordinator when there are open slots for the upcoming meet. And picking up the donuts is absolutely getting points because at our pool you’re also paying for them, so essentially you’re purchasing your point.

Swim team is not a required activity for children to do. If it doesn’t work for your family, then don’t put your kid in swim team.

FWIW the people that volunteer the most on our team also work. They figure it out.

I don’t think any of the “fun” social volunteer slots should be filled until the slots required to host a meet are filled. Great there is a Friday morning pancake breakfast but timers are more important when running a swim meet.
