For what do kids get cords/stalls for? No info from DS’s school so far. |
All of the honors societies. Kids get them directly from the sponsor. There will be a list of all of them at graduation. |
Music and Theater Honor societies (2024 grad) |
It's all spelled out in the program, but beforehand the regalia will come through the activities and honor societies your kid is involved in.
They may differ between schools, too. Our Thespian Society had pins, not cords. Some have a medal or other swag for the Governor's Award for top 5% of the class. Unfortunately, ours didn't. Only a certificate at Senior Night. There are medals for the Seal of Biliteracy, and ours had one for high grades in advanced language classes (World Languages Medal of Excellence). Not sure if that one is statewide, or local. Medals/pins for IB Diploma candidates and Certificate earners. Some schools have medals for magnet or Academy programs. Ours had kente-cloth stoles for the Black Student Union, and white ones for SGA. Pretty sure everyone else had the standard ones, but other schools have more variety. All of MCPS uses a different colored tassel—gold, I think?—for the SSL hours award. Meritorious Service or something like that. Most are paid for through club dues or school fees, but you might be asked to pay for some items. We had to pay for the Seal of Biliteracy and World Language medals, although they did offer provisions for families in need. |
Whole cord thing is over done to me.
I am all for celebrating the kids but it has gotten a bit out of hand. There seem to be so many obscure honor societies and its not even clear how to join them. |
Various societies and clubs. It's meaningless, OP. If your kid doesn't have many (or any), it really doesn't matter!
|
Yea but sadly is a topic of conversation on and off social media. |
OP, stop competing with the other kids/families and look forward to your graduate's future! |
Anything and everything. Makes them feel important. |
OP never said they were |
I have a young adult and a teen. Among my overlapping social circles, there seems to be an inverse relationship between caring about such things and the caliber of institutions the kids attend/general level of intelligence of the families. |
Purple cords for those who have massive community service hours |

Mine was eligible for a bunch, but couldn't be bothered to fill out any of the forms or jump through any of the hoops. So they were top 5% of their class (per the Governor's Award), but had no honor societies. Ultimately, none of it mattered. They were smart enough to figure that out early, I guess? |
(I mean, none of it mattered other than the GPA) |
