They may differ between schools, too. Our Thespian Society had pins, not cords. Some have a medal or other swag for the Governor's Award for top 5% of the class. Unfortunately, ours didn't. Only a certificate at Senior Night.

There are medals for the Seal of Biliteracy, and ours had one for high grades in advanced language classes (World Languages Medal of Excellence). Not sure if that one is statewide, or local.

Medals/pins for IB Diploma candidates and Certificate earners. Some schools have medals for magnet or Academy programs.

Ours had kente-cloth stoles for the Black Student Union, and white ones for SGA. Pretty sure everyone else had the standard ones, but other schools have more variety.

All of MCPS uses a different colored tassel—gold, I think?—for the SSL hours award. Meritorious Service or something like that.

Most are paid for through club dues or school fees, but you might be asked to pay for some items. We had to pay for the Seal of Biliteracy and World Language medals, although they did offer provisions for families in need. [/quote]
