Is is possible to go on a GLP1 to lose about 15 lbs, then go off it after that? I could easily maintain if I could just get there. |
No |
If you could you wouldn’t need the meds in the first place |
No.
GLP-1 drugs treat the medical condition of obesity, which is a metabolic disorder. My doctor has told me that I will need to be on Wegovy for life. The research is pretty clear at this point that when you go off the med, you gain the weight back, usually with some extra bonus weight (so GLP1 meds are, in this way, no different than virtually every other weight loss strategy). That doesn't mean you wouldn't lose weight if you were to use one. It means that your "I could easily maintain if I could just get there" is almost certainly incorrect, and you would likely end up worse off than where you began pretty quickly. You do not want to mess with your metabolism like that. |
Yes, I’m doing it right now. Down 8 pounds with 6 to go. No side effects yet. I am very active and normally eat pretty well but I’m in the throws of perimenopause. You really just aren’t as hungry. If you are already working out 6 days a week and are normally healthy, you can keep it off. I might need a boost before next summer and I’m ok with that. |
you have zero experience keeping weight off after stopping this drug |
You're doing the taking/losing part now. |
I did. Used it for six months, lost 20 pounds, stopped six months ago. Have not regained ANY weight in the last six months. It was really good for reprogramming my brain around quantities and cravings. Cravings are still less intense than before. |
No. I lost the weight, and slowly weened myself. It was fine for 5-6 months. Then cravings hit me like a brick wall. I really don't think there is any long term solution other than staying on the GLP at a lower dose for at least every other week. I am happy that I've started back on it before my rebound weight was too serious. |
This is me. I was on for 4 months and lost 30 lbs. I have been off a year and have continued to lose 10 more! It really reprogrammed my brain and how I think about food. If I feel like I need it again I would not hesitate to go back on. |
Same. If I need to use it for 4-6 months every other year, fine. Better than what I've watched my mom go through just trying to stay not-quite-obese. |
The health impacts of extra weight, even as little as 10 lbs., is studied and is terrible. |
I started Zepbound last year. At the time, my plan was using metformin after I hit my target weight. I also started during shortages so I planned to use metformin then too. I am now seeing some clinical studies showing this can work for some people. It suppresses my food noise but I don't lose weight on it. The suppression should be enough once I hit target weight.
Super cheap. |

Come back in 6 more months and tell us how you have "not regained ANY weight." OP it isn't unusual for people to keep it off for 6 months or so. But within about a year, it starts coming back on. Within about 18 months, the weight is back and more is coming. |
