Embarrassed about Towson

Anonymous
I am trying to get over it. We knew he would stay in the state, and Maryland does not have a ton of options. His dad was insistent that we would never send him away and that seemed fine when we were touring UMD in the Fall. I didn't realize until he got denied at Maryland, that UMD was the only school that I would be happy with. I know others like UMBC, but he wanted more of a social scene and truthfully UMBC is no better than Towson. Outwardly, we both say how excited we are and nobody knows that I feel this way, even my son.

It really hit home when we were at graduation this week and all the girls had their decorated caps with these prestigious universities and my kid is going to Towson.

I had suggested community college with a transfer to UMD, but he was not interested.

Can anyone say positive things about Towson? Did anyone else deal with this feeling of sadness while hiding it from their kid and family?

(He had a 4.8 GPA, 1480 SAT, 9 AP courses)

With a GPA of 4.8, an SAT score at 1480, and 9 APs (assuming all were 4s or 5s), your son could have done much better. His Dad held him back by severely limiting his potential options. Sad.

I'm kind of stuck on why he couldn't go away for school. Why not?

Have solid freshman year at Towson and work on transferring to UMD.

I feel the same way. We are already working on a transfer plan. It's embarrassing now but there's still time to redeem yourselves.

Honestly, mom, YOU are an embarrassment.

My college freshman knows 6 students (at all different schools) transferring Freshman to Sophomore year from top 50's to top 25's. Prior to this I was under the impression that most transferred between sophomore and junior year, but it would seem transferring after freshman year is an option too. I'd continue to hype up Towson, but maybe mention if he wants to transfer to UMD eventually to keep his grades and activities up.

I'm the OP. DH just doesn't believe in going away or paying application fees for schools we were not interested in. He thinks his children should be close and that you shouldn't pay more for a school that has similar outcomes but OOS prices. We had many discussions about it. We both strongly believed that our child would get into Maryland and we wouldn't need to worry about it. It came as a great shock that he didn't get in. Still, DH is outwardly saying that it was the right decision and UMD just wasn't meant to be and Towson is just as good. I don't agree, but for my son's sake I am trying to get there.

I didn't know this was common. I will definitely look into the transfer requirements.

My cousin went there in the 90’s. . She married a lawyer. They own a home on a lake and a penthouse in NYC and just sit around high-fiving each other for being rich. Nobody cares where she went to college.

Oh, bullshit: he could’ve done much better even without fours and fives. The AP exam scores don’t matter all that much. You know less than you think.

TBH, I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's hard to always have to keep the positive outlook when speaking to people! The positives of an anonymous message board!

DP but the AP scores reveal much more than GPA ever could.

he can totally transfer into Maryland. Process is around the corner, starting in the fall, so just look at the application and plan for it.
