ISO weightlifting advice

Anonymous
I’m 50 and have been working out with a personal trainer for 18 months. This is the first time in my life that I’ve followed a steady weightlifting program.

My trainer is leaving the area, and I’m considering moving towards lifting on my own.

One of the things I like about a personal trainer however, is that I just show up and she tells me what to do. 😊

For those of you who lift on your own, how do you develop your weightlifting program? Thanks!

You don't need a "program".

You should have learned proper form of various exercises in 18 months of training with a trainer.

Once you know proper form for around 5-10 exercises per bodypart/muscle, then you are able to decide what movements/exercises works best for you and do them with proper form.

Vary it up now and then.

Consider getting a Tonal? Have had mine for 5 years and it is the best ever - like having a personal trainer and all the weights set for you, and can train several times a week

Take notes on what the trainer has you do and build off of that.

I use an app that I love. You pick 3 or 4 day. Week option and new program comes out every month. There are great videos to explain all the exercises. I love not having to think about it. Sure I could plan workouts, I have the knowledge, but I don’t have the bandwidth. I also find that when I plan my own workouts I pick the moves I like best over what my body is weaker at. Highly recommend especially for someone who has worked with a trainer and has form down but wants a program handed to them each month.

App is web based so not in Apple Store. :

There are also a lot of trainers with programs they sell online.

Thanks! This is what I’m looking for - a way to find a program that will vary my training. The trainer has been progressing me as I get stronger, but I don’t have the knowledge to do this on my own yet.

There are so many amazing apps and online resources with a variety trainers to choose from. My go to is Caroline Girvan. She has free YouTube workouts and an extremely well priced app with additional programs. And there are dedicated Facebook groups for support. If she is not your cup of tea I am pretty sure that once you search for her other trainer will pop up and you can try and meet out what it is exactly you desire. Some talk more, some have popular music, lighter weights - different styles and formats…

I choose to do group training like going to a d1 gym.
You can call the middle school athletes training facility and the coaches might have adult sessions during school hours!

Peloton has a new Strength app

I do a hybrid program with a trainer in Baltimore who focuses on older clients (I am 54). She is great!! She plans out my workouts (which I complete and send her videos so she can check my form) and I visit in person periodically. I tried to work out on my own but I didn't know how to progress. And I didn't want to figure it out on my own! More info on her website fivex3.com

This is all excellent, thanks!

One thing to think about is the slightest deviation in form and you can get an injury (espeically at this age). When I'm with my trainer, every time I slip up somewhere (wrong angle, not getting out of the neck etc) and I'm glad to have him there to correct me. I didn't care when I was younger, but now slightly wrong form can lead to some serious consequences.

I program my own workouts. I use an app called Strength Log and have a set of kettlebells, bands and and exercise bike in my basement. I create 3 workouts that have a variety of exercises that I learned from a trainer or got from a book or online. It takes some time but it’s not hard. I also add in some mobility (just basically some sun salutations) and an HIIT interval on the bike at the end.

as long as you know how to do say 6 foundational exercises it’s not hard to do your own programming.

Yes you do. It’s not actually rocket science.

You don't have to change your "program" all that often, except for increasing your weight. Talk with your trainer about developing an at-home plan for you to use once she is gone. After six months, if things feel stale, do a consult or two with a new trainer to tweak anything (you might be bored, or have found a plateau in your progress, for example).

I've been doing basically the same 3-day split that I got off YouTube for more than a year and I've seen huge gains. The only thing that changes in the weight.
