Record Number of U.S. Students Apply for U.K. Undergraduate Degrees For 2025-26

Continuing from the other thread….

6680 applications from American Students through UCAS to UK universities, the biggest number ever. And a 12% increase over last year. The number is greater than that since some schools like St Andrews allow you to apply directly bypassing UCAS.

Makes sense. There are some fantastic universities overseas and in Canada, plus tuition is lower than a US private university.

This number cant be right or maybe missing a digit….Just St Andrews enrolls about 400 americans per year per the other thread. If enrollment rate there is more like 10% that is 4000 applications to St Andrews alone..

The OP said this likely excludes St. Andrew's. Reading is Fundamental.

Cleary you didn’t understand. Applying outside of UCAS , while possible w St Andrews is NOT how the majority of US applications to At Andrews are done. 1/3 of us applications are through the Common App. But anybody who is applying to more than 1 UK school, they use UCAS.

Makes sense. The brain drain out of the US will only get worse.

Not surprising, more transparent process, greater focus on academic achievement over ECs, greater value for the money and a host of outstanding institutions to apply to, expect the numbers to continue to grow.

Wonderful news, more room for my child! That said, applying and attending are 2 different things.

Yes but none of those are really the main reason American students are now considering universities abroad. I’m going to go with the assault of freedom of speech and vast cuts to research as main reasons.

I don’t think this will have a significant impact on how difficult it is to get into the uk universities. The numbers from India and China are much larger than the US, so if these continue to fall a little the overall number of overseas students won’t change much.

I think US students will integrate much more easily that Chinese given the language issues.

Yeah, encouraging my kid to apply next year so he can work elsewhere when he graduates. It’s not about tuition or admission, it’s about being concerned we are heading into a depression here with no opportunities.

Really? You think a couple of thousand more US students going to college in the UK will make it easier for your child to get into US schools? Do you have any idea of the number of students applying to college in the US every year? There are 1.2 million applicants via the common app. So even if another 10,000 students went abroad this would be less than 1 percent of the total.

I just hope your child is less innumerate than you, or else the only place they will be headed is remedial school.

Chinese students learn English and other languages and do fine. They are used to working much harder than US students.

How to prove you are a MAGA moron in one short post! Shut down your brain and continue to obsessively agree with everything our loser president does without questioning the morality or impact of any of it.

Actually, many Chinese students don’t integrate well and are often hindered by their level of English. The universities might like to diversify more.
