This is the current method for scouting usynt players:
PLAYER SELECTION Players are discovered through two main pathways. Talent Identification Managers lead all selections. Process of scouting by U.S. Soccer at games and/or events. Coach or Club Director Recommendation. Is this the best method, or is there another way…such as open tryouts? This is just one suggestion, but looking for other ideas. Right now, the po Icy seems only to look for most athletic kid, kid with biggest kick, fastest kid. Go! |
I don’t think this is a completely fair assessment. Assurming similar technical skills, the faster, stronger player will be selected even though there is a likelihood that they are early grower and closer to their physical peak. For a smaller, skilled player to be selected, they need to have quickness that is on par or faster than the bigger, faster kids. Quickness/ reaction time combined with agility is what scouts look for. Unfortunately that is pretty hard to find in open tryouts. So I think open tryouts should be an option, I’m all for club recommendations. That’s why I say go to a club where the coach and club thinks ur kid has potential. |
| Club coaches are very limited in what they review. Big physical kid, speed, and ultimately pay to play nvironment. Kids that desire usynt seek out coaches that can place them there. Oftentimes, kids ego gets blown up by their selection. Many times kid doesn’t even develop their weaknesses because it’s just reinforce positives. |

The games need to be 99% of it.
They need to ask the club is the player is a ok teammate. Doesn’t matter if they are crazy just need to follow direction. |
|
Its better through scouting ids. Coaches club recommendations are often not play/merit driven and politics driven. The best players are often times not sent. Which is a wasted opportunity for other players. Often times US soccer can see through the fools gold and not invite those players onward.
But it makes for good insta posts!!! Amirite?! |
Our club doesn’t post their invited athletes on social media or name them when they mention the selections in club communications. Most of the kids won’t even put it on their own social media. You hear it directly from the kid or parents or teammates. You just might be at the wrong club if USYNT invites are viewed as not having earned it. |
| Players are being told that they have to follow a particular coach to be invited to the I’d camps. The coach is using it to recruit kids even when they aren’t real candidates for the selection. Coaches with pull are the deciding factor in who goes. Are the all around balanced players invited or the kid with a big kick, one footed, with little to no iq. In fairness, most of those kids don’t get selected and the kid with the better iq is selected. This raises the question is one player being surrounded by weaker players to get the one player selected….and to build a better club team? |

In our club the DOC uses Talent ID invites as recruitment tools.
It's especially annoying to watch new bench players get invites when starters have never received one. We all know what's going on (top 30 nationwide team). If you want to play on the USWNT youre going to need to go elsewhere. We're u15 and at this point nobody wants to change teams. So we just ignore it all. This is US Soccers loss + its going to look weird when players commit to top schools + have never received an invite. There was one player currently on the B team who US Soccer identified at u13 independent of our DOC that they forced him to give an invite to. So US Soccer is likely aware of the situation. They just dont have a way to address without becoming more involved. |

While I think the process, in particular the transparency can be improved, I believe it generally works.
There may be politics involved in getting selected to attend an ID Center (the first step), but once there is up to you, the player, to perform. Even then, it is a bit of a mystery of why Player A moves up when compared to Player B. But, I think overall the right players end up in the right place. |
Corruption in plain sight is hard to watch. This is the same club who allows coaches to run privates with players on their team. Which inevitably translates into money for minutes as long as the team is winning. What's always seemed odd to me is why doesnt US Soccer run camps players can just pay to get looked at. Im sure they'll say that US Soccer scouts are watching at all high level events. My experience is US Soccer only looks at the new u13s themselves. Everyone else is submitted by clubs via connections. |
It only works now because the pool of potential players is so deep. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. If the talent pool wasn't so deep or if our competitions pool was equally deep it wouldn't work. |
What would open tryouts look like? |
Agree! Simply because scouts are part of the club’s payroll. A club w the scout in payroll is the one sending players to camps. |
A payday for US Soccer. But who cares its about giving all players an opportunity to be seen. |
So you’re proposing open tryouts like ODP? |
