Replacing some middle class White and Asians with poor Asian, Black, White and Hispanic kids isn’t racist. Every institution in the country wants more people from underprivileged backgrounds. Everyone. Making that practice illegal just because middle class POCs of all races won’t get the advantages that they have become accustomed to won’t fly. |
It all depends on how it's done, doesn't it? If you do it as the FCPS School Board did, you end up with at least federal judge concluding that you violated the Constitution, and of course there are other pending cases about admissions before a conservative Supreme Court. Your conclusory statement may be a better wish than prediction. |
Judge Hilton ruled that the admissions process was discriminatory against Asians, and if you read his opinion, the strongest evidence that he was able to provide was a simple before-and-after comparison combined with a reference to a few statements indicating that the School Board and Superintendent wanted to see TJ reflect the community that it drew from. It's not exactly a challenge to get a politically friendly judge to rule that constitutional things are unconstitutional and vice-versa. |
Clearly you didn't read the opinion. That's not all the evidence he pointed to. |
Quotas have been illegal for a long time now. You are basically arguing for racial quotas. Stick to the "each school should have a few seats" argument as your best angle here since it makes sense, and it does not rely on race. Trust me. For example, Arlington and Loudoun contribute to the cost of running TJ so they get an allotment of seats. Every school district in Fairfax contributes to TJ, so they each should get an allotment of seats. |
| Tell that to the POTUS who openly stated that he used gender and race as a hard quota for some of his appointees. |
May be you should look at the quota argument in light of the property taxes from McLean that flow into the County kitty. Not only does the TJ decision penalize McLean residents but McLean High School has also been shafted by the County when it comes to renovations. Perhaps some “equity” ought to be at work here? At least give McLean it’s due? Fix capacity issues at McLean High School? Especially with all the additional kids coming in after the new TJ policy capped Longfellow admissions at TJ? So let us not get into quotas and fair share? McLean pays among the highest taxes per capita and should get equitable treatment from the County. TJ is but one issue, renovating McLean High is another. And these are tied together. |
The people with real money in McLean send their kids to private anyway so they don’t care. |
Those people are primarily in the Langley pyramid which is under capacity so they shouldn’t care. PP, is correct about Mclean high school. |
You always get triggered when highly-qualified black people succeed? There is a word for that… |
If you believe the judiciary is that nakedly political, then it only proves the PP was right and that you should be shaking in your boots about how the Supreme Court will rule in pending and future cases involving challenges to admissions practices rather than making bold claims that Judge Hilton’s ruling will not survive further review. |
If McLean and Marshall are over capacity and Langley is under capacity the solution seems obvious. Adjust the boundaries. |
That’s a different issue but the answer lies in first getting rid of Elaine Tholen, who went along with TJ admissions changes but has done nothing to fight for fair funding for McLean HS despite knowing the changes would mean even more kids at MHS. She’s been a total disaster. |
DP. It is exactly all the evidence he pointed to. |
