Rec to travel at u12

Anonymous
After an email that was sent out by my daughter's coach, we took her out daughter for travel tryouts for u12. The whole process seemed very odd and skewed from the beginning. My daughter didn't even make the lowest team at Loudoun which seems pretty bad after watching trials. After talking to a few other parents, it seems to be the case that we never took our child out to trial for All Stars and that was why she wasn't even looked at. Where do we go from here? I'm pretty jaded by how biased and pre-placed loudoun travel seems to be at this point. Where can I take my kid? She has outgrown rec but we obviously are not in the loop as far as where and when to go for other club tryouts. Any help you can be is greatly appreciated. We aren't looking to have her placed on a top team anywhere. I just know that my child is the best on her current team and shouldn't be playing rec anymore.

If there are other clubs you are interested in it’s worth contacting coaches or directors directly to inquire about supplemental tryouts (now or in Summer) or attending a Spring practice. I’ve received some very nice/informative replies. When the dust settles from tryouts, there’s always spots open. It’s worth a shot. There are other posts about this. It does depend on how far you want to travel.

Start with the pinned post, Travel Soccer for Dummies. That is why it is pinned. It will help you educate yourself first. Then you can proceed from there.

There will always be a spot open.

She can also play up a year in rec.

Depending on where you live, sterling is trying to put together a 2014 girls travel team.

Your experience matches mine and my DD now plays at VRSC. I recommend you contact them for an ID session.

Its a lot better to attend a few practices than attend a tryout at these giant clubs because they pre sort the kids based on their current teams and don't watch the "rec" field. Of course no one tells you this.

Try reaching out to coaches about attending a practice at:
Loudoun South (they ran separate tryouts)
VRSC
Herndon
Sterling Soccer
Great Falls

Not sure where you live so these might be more or less convenient. Leesburg Football
club also has a few girls teams not sure which ages though.

So much essier to find a team for girls, I guarantee you some nearby smaller clubs need players in her age group! Good luck!

We had the same experience at Loudoun so we took our kids to a different club. There are so many in the area, where do you live? I’d start contacting ones close to you.

This is pretty typical of any large club. If you are showing up to tryouts and that’s the first time they’ve seen or heard your daughter (or son) it’s almost impossible to stand out and make a team. Loudoun especially tries to keep kids that have been on teams in a current season on A team going forward and not cut players, so spots at the bottom are rare.

Unless you reach out in advance and talk to a coach (coaches) or join a practice the odds of making it over an existing player are slim as it’s really hard to stand out on a field with over 100 players out there. Decisions are almost fully baked before tryouts at all large clubs and you need to force your way into that pre tryout evaluation and decision making process.

I think tryouts are a crapshoot. My kid made top team and one club and didn't hear back from another. He said he did well at both, so it wasn't like an off day.

Who knows. Maybe they overlooked him. Maybe they only needed 1 player and the other club needed 6.

Just need to cast a wider net and it will work out.

No just Loudon, most of the bigger clubs are like this. My kid went to SYC tryouts for nothing, they pre-picked kids before tryouts to get on teams. Apparently tryouts are where they try and plug holes, but if you want to actually get on the team you want, you're were supposed to go practice w the team ahead of time.

However, now that the tryout dust has settled, you should be able to get on an entry level team. I'd pick one of the travel clubs that is closest to you or maybe one where you child knows someone already playing. It is common to still bring players out to practices to get on team at this point.

OP said her kid wanted to move out of rec into travel.

My take on tryouts is how is a club suppose to toss out the past 9-12 months they have had with a player and replace them with a 1 or 2 day tryout that maybe that player actually played 50 minutes in a game atmosphere.

Just like you wouldn't want your kid to be removed based off 90 minutes, the clubs are not truly looking to replace the entire team. most are probably looking for a diamond in the rough or add a player or two.

also, to the OP - when you filled out the paperwork for tryouts, did you select what level you wanted? Our club lists all the levels. If a player doesn't select the top two levels - they are not even put on the top fields at tryouts.

Our club is going away from tryouts all the together next year for any kid in the club. they will have 3 sitdowns with the player and parent per year to discuss developement plan and progress.

All tryouts will be for new players only and if you want to be on the top team, you practice with them a few times before.
