Anyone rethinking Grad trips outside of the US for their teens?

Each day comes with new stories of US citizens - those born here - being detained by CBP.

And now the DC subreddit post by the mom whose 19 yo was detained returning from study abroad last evening. Again, a US born citizen.

The parent's latest update:
I booked him an Uber and he finally got to the hotel. He was too afraid to talk too much on the payphone at the airport. But he said he was questioned about his loyalty. W the actual F They confiscated his laptop and phone. They said he may get it back in a day or two.

DS and his 2 friends are supposed to spend 2 weeks outside of the US next month after graduation. We are of Italian descent and DS is sometimes confused as Latino because he has dark hair and naturally tan skin. The 2 guys he'll be traveling with are white and very obviously white in terms of skin tones and hair. I think they should cancel and instead go somewhere in the US to be safest.

I don’t know anyone who gets their teens grad trips like this. We travel in very different circles.

Yea I would think twice about traveling abroad these days even as an American, especially if you have a "funny" sounding name.

We live in a dystopian society now.

We're foreigners and our children have dual citizenship. My oldest will be studying abroad next year. I don't think he's at risk. He's multiethnic and looks... really he looks like he could hail from multiple regions of the world.

My husband and I are not going anywhere. We're waiting for green cards and sitting tight right now.

This wouldn't really bother me too much. Detained and questioned and then released? Non-issue. I've been Subject to additional security (SSSS), and while annoying, it doesn't add too much time. Just make sure your kid isn't going to do something stupid, like try to bring CBD gummies or something.

Have you considered being poor? I am and don't worry about things like this. I took DD and best friend for ice cream for graduation.

You mean sending them off on their own?? No. I wouldn't. For MANY reasons. Go together.

Are you kidding? Post graduation trips with friends are the best.

No I have one recent college grad studying abroad and two more college kids traveling currently. I didn’t even think twice about it.
