Should DMV public schools remove student bathrooms entirely?

Anonymous
The Washington Post did a series on MCPS routinely locking students out of the school bathrooms for the entire school day, as an effective method for preventing bathroom vandalism.

The ongoing problem is discussed in this thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/585/1186432.page#29359515

Other threads discuss similar issues and methods in other DMV school systems.

I have to wonder if an effective way to address (and stop) the continuing vandalism of our public schools’ bathrooms would be to remove the bathrooms from schools entirely?

That wouldn't work, though. That would cause bathroom accidents. I have a son with IBS and there are some days when he can't go more than an hour without using the toilet. It would also be difficult for young women to go all day when on their periods.

The only solution, IMO, is bathroom attendants. If they don't want the expense of hiring attendants, then then assign teachers specific bathrooms to cover between classes and before school. Bathrooms, except for 2 specific bathrooms, are then locked during classes. Students can only use those bathrooms during class time, and those 2 bathrooms have cameras pointing at them to record everyone who enters. If vandalism is found, everyone who entered but didn't report it gets in trouble.

That’s the stupidest idea I have read in a while.

Kids who mess up bathrooms should be kicked out of public school. If they can’t respect the space and not fight or vape or keep it clean, they shouldn’t get to stay in free public school.

Yes, remove all bathrooms. Make them go pee outside in the fields. You want real bathrooms you have to pay for private school.

NP, and it is most definitely the stupidest idea I've heard in a long time too.

Should bathrooms be removed from workplaces too? Can you go 8 hours without using the bathroom? How do you propose children relieve themselves during the school day?

You cannot seriously think this would be a good or legally possible idea, op. If you want to post about how bad the bathroom situation is do that, not this absurd nonsense.

Could they put cameras in the sink area of bathrooms? And of course let everyone know about the monitoring? Then they could have someone stop by every 30 min and see if the bathroom stalls were trashed. If they were, they know who was in those stalls.

Can someone explain what would happen if a student had a bodily function need mid-school day, as would occur? There must be a plan for this. What happens.

They can do a lot of things they are not doing instead of just closing them off.

Wouldn't it be better to remove the problematic students instead?

This. I am so sick of this and when are we going to get to this answer. Just get these kids out. Yes, I understand they will be part of society at some point. Put them all in a juvenile detention type school together and do some sort of scared straight program or other intensive interventions. By high school just get them out of the environment.

Right idea, but teachers and administrators have proven themselves incapable of running orderly schools (not entirely their fault, as I think overcrowding is a big contributor…taxpayers want big, fancy schools with low taxes, so there it is). I think we should return to 2020 and close public schools. Parents with means who value education will find their own solutions and those who don’t, won’t. For everyone objecting that this will push women out of the workforce, yeah, it will. That’s the price you pay for not civilizing children over the course of a generation.
