How do I tell DS his shorts are too short?

Anonymous
Hi DCUM. I give my son (15) his own clothes budget and he spends as he sees fit. However, I've noticed lately that the shorts he selects are way to short. It's not a personal aesthetic thing or whatever, it's to a degree that they really look more than underwear than shorts. And he goes to school in these! I want my son to be a little more modest in that regard. How do I bring this up without embarrassing him or making him think I am judging his fashion.

“Son, your shorts are too short.”

“Son, your boys are hanging out.”

I call my girls out in inappropriate clothes when necessary. Direct and without room for negotiation. Different situations have different clothing standards. It’s part of parenting.

This is why you don't just give him money at this age. You say nothing as this was your agreement.

Yup, be direct. I've found it helpful to tell my son what he needs to look for. "Larlo, those shorts with the 5 inch inseam are too short on you now. Please look for the 7 inch inseam next time."

My kid was a swimmer with a perpetual jammer tan, so shorts were not our issue. Pants were a problem tho! We had to be very clear that even though you could put the pants on and zip them, it did not mean they fit you well.

I'm direct with my 15 year old. His boxers show when he sits down because the shorts are too short.

He pushed back but then realized he has been wearing Youth XL shorts not Adult XL shorts. He actually needs a men's medium. He doesn't always realize that he is still growing and needs to increase the size from time to time.

Assuming that "your boys" refers to his friends, why would telling him that his friends are hanging out make him want to wear larger shorts?

Don’t let Nancy Mace get near him!

Family rule - No butt cheeks at school.

I saw a recent thread here about boys' shorts inseam. Many posters were saying 5" is in and kids would look weird in 9". 7" seems too short, too, for tall leggy boys.

That's very aggressive and unhelpful "advice". If you have nothing nice to say say nothing.

What's a "jammer tan"? Asking because my son (9 y/o) is going to start competitive swimming this summer and I've never heard of it. Scared of another thing to worry about. lol!
