Viral clip: Grocer manager entraps special needs deli worker into stealing $100 worth of chicken tenders & fruit cups

Might be one of the most heartbreaking and cruel things I've ever seen. Poor, allegedly special needs teen boy walks to work at a grocery store deli. Apparently eats a chicken tender and fruit cup on his lunch break for a few weeks. Instead of firing him after the first theft, the manager keeps a tab on each food item he eats for lunch until it reaches $100, so he can call police and have him arrested on criminal charges. Happened in Ohio, the police body cam footage was just released. This Midwest grocery chain is owned by the $20bn net worth Meijer family, who are Republican Party royalty.

This is really awful. Why not have his manager sit him down and give him a warning. If it happens again a write up. Third time a firing. He's obviously hungry.

If I were his manager I would have sat him down for a talk. Im sure I would have learned the he didn't have enough money to buy food and that he wa²s waiting for his paycheck to arrive. I would have added up how much it cost to buy the chicken and fruit cup each day until his paycheck and gave him the money to pay for it.

I would literally pay for his lunch out of my own pocket if I saw this. Store managers at one of these mega grocers make $150,000+ a yr, which is excellent coin in flyover country.

This is straight up evil.

Because the manager can’t fire someone with disabilities so instead created a crime to fire him with. So traumatizing. Poor kid.

What happened to employers giving free lunch to teens? My first job was on a golf course in the late 80s and we got a free hot dog or egg salad sandwich, chips, soda and candy bar every afternoon. My teen brothers bagged groceries and got a free deli sandwich with any fixings, sides, and a drink every shift.

This is beyond cruel and evil. The planning and setting up a hungry kid is disgusting. I hope that managers gets everything he deserves in life.

I worked at Dairy Queen. Free ice cream item of our choice every shift, whatever size we wanted, as many toppings as we wanted.

It honestly makes me assume the managers get bonuses for this? A six-figure salary manager stalking cameras all day, for weeks (?), waiting for a poor special needs deli kid to take another chicken tender and 99¢ fruit cup. This comes from the top. This is how evil these austere Republicans are. These companies also get massive tax incentives to hire SN and disabled persons and donate millions in food for more tax write offs.

I cannot believe this is the world we live in now.

I grew up in the Michigan and worked at Meijer when I was in HS. This was back when even hourly jobs had lengthy orientations. Part of orientation was learning to do things "Mrs. Meijer's way"- which included a specific way of treating people and attention to details down to things like how the bathroom doors should be placed (always swinging out) because Mrs. Meijer wanted people to be able to leave the bathroom without touching the door so their hands would stay clean. We also received a lunch credit for our shifts that worked out to a very substantial discount.

I've worked with a lot of petty, evil managers, but never at my hourly jobs and especially not when I was at Meijer.
