My kid hopes to take AP CS principles in grade 9, but wasn't sure if it was helpful to take Foundations of computer science in grade 8, as sort of an intro. They'd rather do a music elective in grade 8, but also didn't want to go into a tough class unprepared in grade 9.

| A lot of students take AP CSP as their first CS class. It's not necessary to take FOCS first. |
| Oldest took in middle school - second took in AP in high school - I wish I would have waited and done in High School as it is another AP credit. My first took in middle school as I said so then did not take again in high school. Just moved on to programming |
? Are kids taking AP CS principles in middle school? |
No |
| I would, AP CS is a lot of work. |
You would what? Take Foundations of CS as a precursor to AP CS? |
Take music in grade 8. Take FOCS in summer school if your kid isn’t super organized or generally on top of work. Otherwise AP CS in 9th is fine without any previous work. |

On one of these pages, there's more about FOCS and AP CS Principles. |

| Is it possible to do fundamentals of computer science in summer school (rising 8th or 9th grade?) to free up time for another elective? |
| Yes |
Yes But not free, unfortunately |
It really should be all these bogus classes |
