Organic chemistry

This is abt my niece who I know well. She is having a terrible time with organic chemistry.

She is a genuinely smart girl and a good test taker generally doing well at a top 50 school in her intro stem classes but this class seems like it’s going to break her-she will be extremely lucky to get a C.

My question is-what’s going on/how common is this? If this happened to your adult kid what did they do?

For context-this really is my niece. (My own college kid is an English major and would def bomb this class. )

also, I actually took two semesters of orgo in college myself and I remember it as quite hard but not impossible for me, a not highly diligent student. Thats actually partly why I’m asking-I know this kid and remember the class I took and it doesn’t make sense to me!

Org chem took my now-husband out of pre-med in college. It is THE weed out science course. He got a double major in business and is now a CPA/CFO- it worked out but there are times he still wishes he had pushed through to being a pediatric orthopedic. Such is life. Medicine can feel like a calling in a way business doesnt.

O chem was easy for you and hard for her? On the scale of courses, it’s super hard. It really takes a different kind of learning to get it.

Knock out my super smart SIL from a tip top pre-med program.

It wasn’t easy for me at all-it just seemed like a really hard class that could be surmounted with enough studying, not something that a smart, stem-minded kid who works hard and usually tests well might fail!

Why do they need to weed out pre-med? We need more doctors!

My kid didn’t have any problems with O. Chem classes. Currently in Johns Hopkins med school.

Not according to the American Medical Association

This was the worst class for many of my doctor friends and known as the weed out class. One got a C in the class, but still managed to get into a Top 15 medical school.

Why does it matter what they think? It is the university weeding out the kids.

Having weed-out classes save lives, because they keep stupid ones out.

Organic chemistry separates the men from the boys.
