I stopped drinking coffee and I am surprised by the effect on my weight. Anyone else?

Anonymous
Almost 10 days ago I stopped drinking coffee. I feel like it has contributed a lot to the weight loss I have experienced (I just lost almost 4 pounds in that time period). It is primarily belly bloat that is gone and I am guessing water weight. But has anyone had a similar experience ?

It doesn’t make sense to me as it was black coffee (no milk no sugar) and I replaced it with tea with as splash of milk and I am actually hungrier in the morning as black coffee had a bit of an appetite suppressant effect for me. So if anything I replaced the coffee with more calories in the morning.

Could it be just the cortisol effect? Anyone else noticed a positive change after they stopped coffee?

Dropping coffee is not the reason you have lost weight.

Were you eating low calorie before? You might be eating more at breakfast, less later in the day

I was already eating a very healthy diet before. Started counting my calories about 5 days ago but I haven’t made drastic changes to my diet yet apart from the coffee 10 days ago and more recently alcohol (but same as coffee I actually switched to something as calorical as my glass of wine for the moment).

The weight loss started earlier than that which is why I am wondering if the coffee could have had an effect.

I think your suggestion makes sense. Without noticing I am probably eating a bit more at breakfast but less the rest of the day.

It's the alcohol. I cannot lose weight if I drink.

Oh, for the love of God obviously it’s the alcohol. It’s not just the calories in the alcohol that makes you gain/keep on weight. It’s what it does to your metabolism and entire body system.

Way to bury the lede. Your title should be I stopped drinking alcohol. It’s not the coffee

Thanks, a big chunk of the drop happened before I stopped alcohol, in the first 5 days.Thats why I am wondering if someone else had that effect. I have also stopped drinking alcohol before but didn’t have such an immediate impact (I have never tried not drinking coffee).

It could just be the timing with your cycle. I always lose weight at the beginning, and always gain at the end (before my period). It's hormonal bloat. Combined with stopping alcohol, and there you go.

I stop my acid reflux and food sensitivity in track when I stop coffee and alcohol.

Op here. Very good point

When I cut coffee creamer and sugar (just use a little whole milk now) I lost weight. It came with some other changes, but I think we all underestimate how much sugar we consume.

I am very reactive to coffee OP and it makes me swell.

Yes and yes.

Coffee is a traditional digestif and will cause weight gain and fat redistribution to the midsection, regardless of how you drink it, due to the stimulant nature of the caffeine.
