Will hit the Governor’s desk before becoming law, so it isn’t a done deal yet. Nevertheless, it is newsworthy.

Maryland has a $3 billion budget deficit, FYI.

One more reason to avoid Maryland. We should study and learn from history, but "reparations" for slavery in the current decade is just imbecilic.

Exactly. They're adding a 3% digital services tax. Adding a capital gains tax. And raising income tax rates on the higher income brackets.

Maryland is already in the bottom 5 when it comes to best places to start a business. Why are they wasting time on these commissions?

Omg can they not read the room? This is horrible timing. I wish I could move out of MD.

Maybe it’s newsworthy, but it’s a tiny blip on the radar compared to the utter and complete incompetence being displayed by the current “presidential” administration.

They aren't mutually exclusive and unfortunately have a tendency to reinforce one another.

Can't wait to see Hogan become our next governor in 2026.

This is mental illness level whataboutism. Here we are on the local politics thread discussing a Maryland issue, and you go “but what about Trump?!?”.

You honestly need psychiatric help.

That escalated quickly

Well, every other group has received reparations. And if the U.S. has had money to give to whiny ass Israel since forever and to the Ukraine, they have money for us.

I would argue that reparations are due to anyone who can prove their lineage to a harmed relative. HOWEVER that should only be in exchange for the elimination of any state DEI programs that disproportionately target AA by race. Once reparations are paid then the debt is settled and any further racial prioritization would be beyond reason.

Excellent idea. That would narrow reparations down to a tiny fraction of people, and thus make it more affordable for the state.

However you know it's not going to happen: the rest of that group is going to want to keep DEI, because they will argue that they are racially discriminated due to the color of their skin, not because generations of their ancestors were kept from accessing property and wealth.

And then the debate changes from a specific slavery debate, to a general racism debate. The former can be fixed by a one-time reparation; the latter is an ongoing, seemingly never-ending struggle on perceived and actual colorism. How much effort is a diverse multi-cultural population prepared to make to level the playing field when it comes to skin color?

Wife’s parents are die hard liberals. They want to move to the area to be close to us and grandkids. For years now Virginia was off the table, but now they are both looking in Virginia and claim it’s because of taxes and crime.

I think just as conservatives should be able to admit that some of their national politics suck, even die hard liberals need to be able to admit that their local governance is absolutely horrible.
