Anyone following this story? 360 million dollars promised to Maryland schools —and so largely already being spent—- is now being withdrawn.

I guess this cutting in education spending is to save tax dollars towards reducing national debt. |
I guess this cutting in education spending is to save tax dollars towards preserving tax cuts for rich people. |

Oh so we were ALL going to be affected?!!:

| TERRIBLE. |
| If it's all being spent, the feds will have a really hard time clawing it back. |
|
They're stopping reimbursements to state & locals from ESSER funding remaining from the CARES bill providing relief for the pandemic, effects of which linger in education.
MCPS had spent/been reimbursed for nearly all it was authorized. MD as a whole -- not so much. We'll have to see what the downstream effects to MCPS might be. |
| so they didn't have their act together to spend these funds properly or fast enough? Is this a failure of the school district? I Guess it makes sense covid ended years a go. |
It does not work like that. The fed government reimburses money so they now will not reimburse. Basically the federal government said we will give you this amount of money for these certain programs/construction so go ahead and do these things. And by said I mean legal documents not handshake deal. So the school system spent money they already had on hand for the things the government said were acceptable expecting the federal government to keep its word and reimburse. Now the school system has spent money in good faith expecting money back from the fed government and the fed government has said no, we will not pay the money. This means the school system now must cancel upcoming expenditures it can no longer afford. It also means construction projects being done with this promised money cannot be completed. It also means that if state governments (education system) are promised money from the federal government, they now cannot longer depend on that money actually arriving. In layman’s terms your friend agreed to split a lease with you and signed all the legal stuff and promised in writing on a legally binding document that they would pay a certain amount once you had rented the apartment. You had everything legally documented and in hand so went ahead and paid first and last months rent, got your renter’s insurance and furnished and so on. Then your friend said nah and you were left holding the bag and weirdly all the legal documents you had no longer matter since the court has decided that actually the legal documents are no longer legally binding. |
No they had their act together and legally applied for and got an extension on time to spend. Not a failure of the school district or state. They followed the legal process in spending. Now, the federal government is retroactively saying the legal process followed by the education department in granting the extension is not one the new education department will honor. |
| "We're in the middle of a hostile government takeover. I wanna talk about it but I'll be late for work. And if you're saying wait a minute who we got to stop this? We had her but you didn't want that lady in office" |
| Maryland and MCPS should have anticipated and planned for this once Trump was elected. The fact that they are caught flat-footed now is completely on them. |
No, what Musk and Trump are doing is illegal, irresponsible and cruel and that's on them. It is not on Maryland and MCPS to obey in advance. Not saying Maryland and MCPS don't have serious structural budget issues - they absolutely do - but expecting them to plan for intentional chaos is preposterous. |
"It's their fault for assuming the United States government would follow through on its legal obligations under GOP rule" is not the flex you think it is. |
