| My DD just found out that the full-time post-graduation job she was expecting to start this summer at the company she has interned at for over 2 years is not available--at least not in the near future. The HR office basically said that things were too uncertain in terms of future work/income for the company for them to take on any new hires, even though HR and the higher ups she has worked with had practically told her the job was hers when she graduated. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the current uncertainties in the economy--especially because the job is related to construction, which will be affected by tariffs--but I'm curious to hear whether others are experiencing the same thing. |

Anyone about to graduate who hasn't already secured a full-time job (i.e. most) should just start studying for the GRE and plan on going to grad school in hopes that the market is better by the time you finish.
There are still plenty of 2024 and earlier grads who have yet to land their first "real" job. |
| I’ve heard CS and software engineering jobs are hard to find now even for kids from top schools. Pre pandemic grads were getting competing offers from FAANG. I’m really curious about this as everything was focused on the lack of enough US kids in CS just 10 years ago. Have the schools doubled or tripled the size of their programs? |

Tech has been a rough industry with a lot of layoffs in recent years, including software engineers.
FAANG companies over hired during the pandemic to provide shareholders with great "growth" numbers. Now that the economy has turned, they have been cutting staff like crazy for quite some time now. Schools have also introduced or increase the size of tech related programs. It's just another oversaturated industry with candidates also having to compete with equally skilled off-shore talent working at a fraction of the cost. |
| My ‘25 who had built a nice little undergrad resume in work related to international development has obviously had to pivot. She’s a Fulbright semifinalist but that feels pretty fraught even if it comes through. She’s got one job offer and a grad program in Europe as options right now, still waiting on a few more things. We’re strongly encouraging any opportunity that gets her out of the country |
That's not dramatic at all. |
| Mine has 3 offers ranging from 70-90k, still wrapping up final interviews. Will probably pick the best fit one in the middle. It’s been something’s like 25-30 interviews through all the different rounds, I will say the university name has helped A Lot getting into the recruitment process even when late in the game, some employers have accelerated DC through the pipeline. apply widely! And good luck! |
| My VT grad has accepted a data scientist job at the place he interned last summer. In DC, $85k. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't go away between now and June! |
What field? |
|
It's tough out there. My DS has been getting interviews but has not scored an offer yet. Unfortunately he is in policy/international relations. He interviewed with a law firm a couple of weeks ago that said they had 500 applicants for the position. He felt fortunate to interview but didn't make the cut to get a second. He just found out about another top firm is offering an interview so that's hopeful. It's really tough in his field right now.
I've encouraged him to keep looking, take anything even if it's an internship and study for the LSAT this summer. He has friends in consulting who have been informed their start dates are pushed back to December. This has got to be the worst market to graduate into in a long while. |
| My DS, who is going into teaching, received an offer from his first interview and he accepted it. I knew he wouldn't have a difficult time finding a job. The job is at a private high school and we had heard that their salaries were significantly less than what he would earn in public school. Yes, the offer was less but just slightly and he most likely will have better working conditions (better behaved students, no students significantly below grade level.) |
| My niece that is a nurse got a job for $85k (graduates in May) |
Teachers are in high demand. My nephew with a grad/MS from Hopkins got affected by the Fed hiring freeze. He is temporarily working as a HS teacher (finding misery in a class with way too many kids and no discipline--wild). They are losing teachers everywhere and there is a big need. He is doing it for $/health benefits-teaching APs he's dedicated but disillusioned with no support--his aid never shows up, etc. |
| OP: Did your DD receive and offer or was she expecting an offer? |
^ meant to say, yes, this is public. Your kid is smart to take the private HS. We moved our kids to private HS for many of these issues. |
